Banner, the dark bay with the narrow stripe on his face was said to be Wayne's favorite due to his docile nature. Wayne was no lover of horses but he did appreciate a well-trained one. Banner made several pictures with Wayne (Angel And The Badman) during the late 1940s and early 1950s and was also ridden by other screen cowbows such as Andy Devine in old Roy Rogers westerns. Banner was owned by the Fat Jones Stables of Los Angeles, who also supplied the horses for TV's long-running western Bonanza and others. Banner passed on to 'greener pastures' in the mid 1990s of the wobbles. RIP Banner.

John Wayne, born Marion Morrison was born in Winterset, Iowa. His parents were Clyde Morrison and Mary Morrison. When he was little, he moved from Iowa to Glendale, California. During that time, he swam in an irrigation ditch and rode a horse to school. So, in all, he had a pretty cool childhood!

He went to a public school.

He wanted to very much. But by the time WWII rolled around Wayne was in his 40s and had four small children to provide for. So he did the next best thing. He made movies about the war which in part helped to keep the morale up on the homefront. He also went to the troops, shook a lot of hands and told the enlisted men how much America and the free world appreciated all they were doing to end the tyranny in Europe. They loved him. Wayne, whether you liked him or not, was not capable of insincerity. The soldiers knew it too.

Utter nonsense. Wayne sought to avoid the draft, the war, and the service, very hard, which is why he remains among veterans of that time, persona non grata. Even his best friend, John Ford, chided him for his evading service. Many believe that to compensate for his cowardice and selfishness, he played the "super-patriot" the rest of his life, making millions from a false front while REAL heroes, like Gable, and James Stewart, and DiMaggio, who had as much, if not MORE to lose, risked their lives and were genuine heroes.

He told friends he'd enlist after he made just one or two more movies.

The real question is why he never did so. Wayne cranked out thirteen movies during the war, many with war-related themes. Most of the films were enormously successful and within a short time, the Duke was one of America's most popular stars. His bank-ability now firmly established, he could have joined the military, secure in the knowledge that Hollywood would welcome him back later. He even made a half-hearted effort to sign up, sending in the paperwork to enlist in the naval photography unit commanded by a good friend, director John Ford.

But he didn't follow through. Nobody really knows why; Wayne didn't like to talk about it.

He was a pharmacist.

In 1933 Riders of Destiny was released, Wayne played Singing Sandy Saunders, a part he hated. Since singing was not one of Wayne's strong points his voice was dubbed over. But it was the depression and you do what you have to do.

John Wayne was a living example of truth, honesty, integrity and the American way of life. He was proud of the United States of America and supported all the military branches of our armed forces. He influenced many generations, and will continue to do so through his movies.

The John Wayne Medal was authorized by the U.S. Congress on May 23, 1979. Only one solid gold medal was made and it was presented to the family of John Wayne in 1980. The medal sold to the public was produced in bronze. If you have one dated 1976 or made of gold it is not a U.S. Mint issued coin. The gold versions of the John Wayne Medal are bronze medals which have been plated by a private company and have whatever value you may place upon them. Bronze versions currently sell for $3 to $7. February 16, 2010.

He did in private life. Many of his westerns took place before Levi Strauss designed the first pair of jeans.

He was married three times. His first wife was Josephine Saenz (married in 1933, divorced in 1944). His second wife was Esparanza Bauer (married in 1946, divorced in 1953). His third wife was Pilar Palette (married in 1954, permanently separated in 1973, but they did not officially divorce.

I think she still lives in Newport Beach, CA but not in the same house they shared. She moved out when they separated in the 70's.

John Wayne was and still is an American legend and the biggest movie star of all time. His career in films spanned 50 years with over 200 films to his credit. Born Marion Michael Morrison, on May 26, 1907, in Winterset, Iowa. Known for his patriotism and outspoken views, mostly on politics, Wayne never backed down if he thought he was right. Wayne won his only Oscar in 1969 for True Grit. Married three times and the father of seven children, Wayne died of cancer in June 1979 at the age of 72.

That was a POW/MIA bracelett from the Viet Nam war. Those braceletts had the name of one POW/MIA that had not made it home. Years after the end of the war the government finally made some effort to find some of those soldiers and get them back home to their families. The braceletts raised money and awareness about their plight. It's not at all surprising that Wayne wore the band. He supported the war and the men that fought it.
