Why is Joseph smith remembered?

The "Mormons" (members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) do NOT worship Joseph Smith. We worship the same Lord as all other Christian religions. We just believe that Christ, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit are three DIFFERENT entities in three DIFFERENT forms. Joseph Smith only restored the church in the new world.

Mormons worship only God the Father and Jesus Christ. To worship anything or anyone else is blasphemy. We believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet, just like Moses, Abraham, Isaiah, etc. We revere and respect him as a man of God, but do not worship him, just as we do not worship any of the other prophets.

How many underage wives did Joseph Smith have?

At one time during the early years of the church there were many widows that needed to be taken care of. For this reason, and a few others, the Lord revealed to Joseph Smith that he and other men in the church should take more then one wife. So yes, Joseph did have more then one wife. We don't know how many because of the reason listed above--since so many of the marriages were political contracts with older widows to allow them to keep their property, to assure that he would pay their mortgages, etc., it is assumed that there were many polygamous relationships that were not only non-sexual, but where the two may have never met one another. The church hasn't practiced polygamy since 1890.

The answer above gives an apologetic view to Mormon Polygamy and in some areas not 100% accurate. There is no historical evidence for the amount of widows compared to men in the Church in the early 19th Century. That argument is not accepted by historians and holds no water. The reason for the revelation calling Joseph Smith to live "the Principle," as it is called among some Fundamentalist groups, or Polygamy is contained in the revelation itself. He received the revelation because he was inquiring of the Lord concerning David, Solomon and Abraham's practice of plural wives. Historian Todd Compton in his book "In Sacred Loneliness" provides ample evidence that Joseph Smith had at least 28 plural wives and possible up to about 32 maximum. So, to answer your question, yes, Joseph Smith did have more than one wife. The argument above that Joseph Smith was married to them only to help them financially also holds no water, he was steeped deeply in debt and could not have rendered much, if any, financial support for those women. Joseph Smith did meet his wives and there are arguments for sexual relations between the two. However, the sexual relations must have been few and rare because in that time period there were no serious contraceptives and if Smith were running around with nearly 30 women on a regular basis there would be nearly dozens of documented and plausible illegitimate children. The thing is there are none. No one has found evidence supporting that any one person was an illegitimate child of Joseph Smith through any of his wives other than Emma Hale Smith. There are possibly 3 cases that could argue to be Smith's illegitimate children however none are accepted by scholars as plausible, let alone true. While many Latter-day Saints would like to think that all polygamy ended in 1890 there were many Members who did not accept the Manifest from President Wilford Woodruff and continued to perform and engage in Polygamous marriages. This is why we see so many fundamentalist Mormon sects today like the one Warren Jeffs once lead.

There are two camps to this question; (1) Brother Joseph was only married to Emma, and (2) Brother Joseph had between 40 to 80 other wives. From my high level of scholarly research, I have found not one single shred of credible historical evidence that Brother Joseph had more than one wife. While it is "cool" to say that he did, a rigorous academic investigation will show that claims that he had more than one wife hold no historical weight.

What was joseph smith's impact on history?

Today, millions revere Joseph Smith Jr. (1805-1844) as the prophet of the "restoration" of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Early American Christianity sought to de-legitimize Catholicism for its monarchical appearance. Many taught the bishops of the Catholic church had lost authority following the deaths of the Apostles. JS claimed at a young age to have beheld many visions of angels and deity and to have been the instrument of God to restore Christ's true church to the earth. On 6 April 1830, JS and five others officially organized the Church of Christ. Since then millions have accepted his claims to revelation and reception of holy priesthood authority. Many churches have sprung up as a result of his Latter-day Saint movement such as: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) based in Utah; the Community of Christ based in Independence, MO; and the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, also based in Independence, just to name a few.

Who was the founder of Mormon church who was killed by mob?

Joseph Smith, Jr. founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) in April, 1830 and was the leader of the church until he was murdered in Carthage, Illinois in June, 1844.

Was Joseph smith a Freemason?

As in the Knights Templar?? No. Joseph Smith, Jr. (founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints/"Mormon" church) was never affiliated with the Knights Templar. The Knights Templar is largely associated with the Roman Catholic Church, both the church and the organization were extremely unpopular in the time and location that Joseph Smith lived.

What movement did Joseph Smith start?

Joseph Smith didn't "find" any religious movement. He, in a way, founded one, the "Mormonism" branch of the Restorationist Christian movement. However, most Christian scholars would agree that he was simply one of the many who brought the Restorationist Movement into light during the Second Great Awakening. Other Christian denomininations, including the Christadelphians, Adventists, Charismatics, and Disciples of Christ, are usually considered Restorationist Christianity as well. Occasionally earlier groups are also referred to as Restorationists, including the Anabaptists and Puritains.

Why did Joseph Smith travel the Mormon trail?

This question is a two part question that has no answer. The Mormon Trail is commonly known as the trek westward from the state of Illinois to the (now state) of Utah which began in 1846. The Prophet Joseph Smith was assassinated prior to the trek westward in 1844. Therefore Joseph Smith never traveled the Mormon Trail.

Why did the mob kill Joseph Smith?

Here are a couple of reasons why Joseph Smith was killed. One, the people that lived in the area of Western Illinois didn't like the Christian beliefs that Joseph believed and was teaching. Two, the citizens of Western Illinois thought if they killed Joseph Smith, the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons), all the people following him would pack up and leave. This actually happened, but it was a couple of years later when they did move to Salt Lake City. It wasn't that the mobs were hoping that the Mormons would pack up and leave, they hoped that the religion would fall apart and that Mormonism would be no more.

Other reasons the mob killed Joseph smith include:

  • Missouri wanted to become a state of the United States, but wanted to enter the Union as a slave state. Most 'Mormons' tended to be conservative and were against slavery. They were in Missouri in sufficient numbers to sway the vote for Missouri to enter the Union as a "Free State." Therefore, Missouri politics of the day was to either remove Mormons from Missouri or Kill them (by order of the then Governor Boggs). Some especially evil people saw this as Government approval for killing Mormons even if they were not in Missouri.
  • Many living on the border of 'Indian Territory' wanted to kill all Native Americans because they were in the way and were considered dangerous. Mormons, on the other hand, were teaching Christianity to the Native Americans, which did not sit well with some Missourians.
  • Because there was so much persecution of the Mormons at the time, many Mormons in business, farms, stores, etc. tended to do business with other Mormons mostly, and not so much with non-Mormons. This made some non-Mormons mad.
  • Mormons have always practiced the principle of Lay Ministry, other religions of the day did not. Many ministers felt this was a declaration that they were wrong in asking for a wage (of sorts) for doing their ministerial work, and it made 'some' of them angry. Some of these ministers incited people to riot and harm the Mormons.
  • Many ministers were of the belief that revelations from God did not occur anymore, once the Bible was 'completed' and both Jesus and his apostles were killed. Joseph Smith was of a different opinion and said he had received further revelation from God. Some ministers took this personally. In their minds it was as though Joseph was calling them liars. He wasn't, he simply disagreed with them.
  • Joseph was the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (or Mormon) Church in his day and this church was very young, compared to most other churches at the time. If Joseph could be killed, it was felt that the Mormon issue would just go away.
  • There are many reasons (the above list are just a few), and early-day Mormon Polygamy often caries the sole blame in the minds of some, which is actually a false notion. Polygamy may have been one of the reasons, but not likely the primary reason, nor even one of the more important reasons. Mormons were simply different and being different often attracts the attention of those that have the propensity to do harm.

Who is Joseph Smith?

There are probably more than one man with the name "Joseph Smith", since both "Joseph" and "Smith" are common names... But; A Joseph Smith was the founder of the Mormon church. He is a "Prophet" for his reported activities during the organization of the church. Others call him greedy and a sexual predator. Which isn't true!!!!

AnswerJoseph Smith was the name of the founder of the Mormon church and translator of the "Book of the Mormon," published in 1830.

Mr. Smith claimed to receive additional revelations from God in addition to the Bible. Such claims contradict the Bible's instructions in Revelation 21:18 which says,?I am bearing witness to everyone that hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone makes an addition to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this scroll; 19?and if anyone takes anything away from the words of the scroll of this prophecy, God will take his portion away from the trees of life and out of the holy city, things which are written about in this scroll."

AnswerAs the first answer said, there were tons of Joseph Smiths. One particular Joseph Smith was the leader of the church most commonly known as the Mormon church, however the church's true title is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He only wished to follow the teachings of the Lord and share his revelations. I cannot deny that Revelation states what the above does, but that's not a literal meaning. The verses meant that no one would write false doctrine after that. Even though Revelation is the last book in the Bible it wasn't the last book written, in fact the author of the book wrote after Revelation. The Book of Mormon is what ancient Native Americans wrote of their side of the story of Jesus Christ. If you want to test what I've said, study the Book of Mormon yourself, or contact a local member of the church. Joseph Smith was a righteous man. ANSWER:The Revelation (Not Revelations) is most definitely literal in its admonition not to add or take from anything in that book. The statement above that it is not literal is a lie, probably intended to arrange things so that the Mormon story fits better...that is a terrible error...However, it happens that this threat applies only to the Book of The Revelation. The bible was not written all at once, and when the Revelation was written, the Bible was not put together in the same way we see it today. The beginning of our modern Bible did not take place in earnest until the 1300's, but has been re-translated and organized since those first endeavors. There are book gathered in "The Apocropha" that have been deemed by human beings as less than accurate or contradictory etc, or at odds with the established government... so were not included in the bibles you see today. The primary examples are books regarding great acts or prophecy of women and works having to do with taxes etc. In addition, there have been further scrolls discovered in relatively modern times, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Joseph Smith is believed to have been a petty criminal, thief, con man, liar throughout his life. He claims to have been chosen to receive two golden tablets that he claimed were Americas answer to the word of God, written by a man named migrant Jew named Mormon, inspired by Christ after the crucifixion, during the three days Christ was dead. He established the Church of the Latter Day Saints, married 34 women in his lifetime, seven of them already married to other men. He was murdered as were others who began the religion beside him.

answer:

Joseph Smith was the first latter-day prophet of the Mormon church. Through revelation from God, he was able to restore the true church to the earth after it had been lost in the apostasy. He was righteous, and he was also murdered by people who had been persecuting the Mormons for years. The government actually helped them to kill him. The actual, original book of Mormon was a record of ancient people called lamanites and nephites, and a lot of other -ites. The doctrine and covenants and pearl of great price are revelation received from god.

answer:

http://www.exmormon.org/Mormon/mormon451.htm

the following link gives an explanation of some of what Joseph Smith was accused of doing.

It is the opinion of this author that anyone seeking information re: any religion or Religious leader, take research upon themselves and make sure that what they are hearing is accurate. There are two extremes regardless Joseph smith, and no real middle ground whatsoever. Doubtful that he could be both. While I, a biblical scholar do not believe that Christ visited north America and had golden plates for His message. When they came to Moses from God himself, they were stone, not gold...although gold was available. This flies in the face of Jesus' message as for him, wealth was an anathema...a disaster for the soul of men...Further, where Christ was in those three days after his death is covered in the Bible and does not mention Mormon or any earthly visits beyond those to his disciples in that period of time.

ANSWER:

Joseph Smith was an AMAZING man who had a vision of an Angel come to him and tell him of these Golden Plates that were the words of people from many many years before. Joseph Smith was only fourteen when he went to a grove and prayed for help to chose which church to join. Two beings robed in white appeared and told him that he would create a church, and that is what Joseph Smith did. If you have any questions, you may contact a Missionary from the Mormon Church, and note that they have a name tag that states 'Elder' if it is a boy, or 'Sister' if it is a girl, and next to that will be their last name, and under that will be the following: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They may tell you about anything you ask them. The other option here is to go to the following site:

http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=62f3dc26cca8b010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&locale=0

When you get there, you may click on the 'Questions about the Church' bar, and that will help you. Joseph Smith was accused of many wrong things. Polygamy is not done in the LDS church, and Joseph Smith was killed because of Cruel, unfair,

NO RELIGIOUS FREEDOM!

Answer:

Joseph Smith organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (also known as the LDS Church), and although there are rumors that he practiced polygamy, was a thief, liar, and practiced false doctrine, these things are absolutely not true. He was persecuted for founding the Church, thrown in jails for suppoesed 'wrongs' he did, and was illegaly killed while inprisoned. Throughout this he still believed that the Lord was with him. His life shows denial of religious freedom, which should have been granted to him by the government. Here's a really grate song you should check out :

Joseph smith is awseome! even though he died he still was the first prophet of the church of Jesus christ of latter day saints!
Joseph smith was the founder of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Why did Joseph Smith create Mormonism?

It was not Joseph who founded the Mormon religion, he was only an instrument in Gods hands. When a boy of about 14 years of age Joseph Smith became confused as to there being so many religions all professing to be Gods church. There was a passage in James chapter 1 verses 5 and 6 which caught his eye. "If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God..."

Joseph did just that, he went to a wood near his home and prayed that he might know which church was the right one. He was visited by God the father and His son Jesus Christ, and was told not to join any of them for they were all wrong.

Joseph was told of very ancient writings contained upon thin gold plates. It was the history of early American peoples who came out from Jerusalem and settled the Americas. It told of Gods dealings with these people, of their wars and contentions, until finally after many years only one people were left. The remnant of these people are the American Indians.

These golden plates which Joseph was allowed to translate by the power of God later became known as The Book of Mormon, Mormon being the last prophet to edit the records of these early American peoples.

The Book of Mormon goes hand in hand with the Bible, and confirms many truths which are contained in the Bible, but also adds to it many other precious truths which have been left out.

It was Christ who named the church as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, He being the head of the church. Joseph was the first prophet in this last dispensation. To this day the church has never been without a prophet to lead the church through inspiration from on high.

Addition from another user on 4/9/2012: It should be noted that the above answer is not the only potential answer to this question. Joseph Smith's motivations have been questioned widely. He was brought to court and convicted of money-digging (a con that involved charging people to tell them where they could find treasure), meaning that he was actively working as a con man at the time he was "creating" this new religious sect. It is interesting, and perhaps telling, that this type of "envisioning" is similar to how Joseph Smith allegedly heard the word of God. Although I am far from an authority on this subject, 10 minutes of research were all it took to find preliminary evidence that casts serious doubt on Robert's response. I'm not saying I'm right, but I think it is fair for anyone who sees the above response to know that there are varying opinions and they should research them further. Regardless of what you ultimately conclude for yourself, this should not be your last stop in answering this question.
