Did Juliette Gordon Low speak American Sign language?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, Juliette Gordon Low was not known to have ever learned or spoken sign language.

Due to the fact that she was not completely deaf and that her hearing loss occurred later in life, Juliette probably did not learn sign language. In fact, there are stories about how she used her hearing loss to get people to do things she asked them to do. If they tried to tell her "no" she would just go on talking as if she had not heard them.

Also keep in mind that there was a lot of stigma about sign languages prior to the 1960s.

Founding and maintaining what eventually became a national organization is surely a full-time pursuit in its own right. After 1912 and until the end of her life in 1927, supporting the Girl Guide and Girl Scout movement was her main occupation and major drive in her life.

Juliette was a child of wealth and married a man of substantial wealth, so she was not expected to have a job. She traveled, was a skilled painter and sculptor, helped her mother organize a convalescent hospital for wounded soldiers, and then spent most of her time and her wealth in bringing Girl Scouts to the USA.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Juliette Gordon Low had hearing problems. Due to improper treatment of ear infections as a girl, she lost most of the hearing in one ear. During her wedding, a piece of rice became lodged in her ear causing her to lose all the hearing in the other ear.

Juliette also had a back injury which kept her from riding horses, one of her favorite activities.

She died in 1927 from breast cancer which had metastasized (spread to other parts of her body).

She used her deafness to benefit Girl Scouting. She recruited many local society matrons to get involved with Girl Scouting in Savannah. If a potential recruit tried to object, she simply didn't hear it . . . and that was that!

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Juliette Gordon Low suffered from chronic ear infections. At the age of 25, Juliette persuaded the doctor to try an experimental treatment for ear infections, an injection of silver nitrate. This treatment damaged her ear, causing her to lose a great deal of her hearing in that ear.

On her wedding day, a piece of rice became lodged in Juliette's other ear. Since Juliette was leaving on her honeymoon, she did not want to take the time to see a doctor. The rice festered in her ear and became infected so that, by the time she finally went to a doctor, the instrument used to remove the rice made her deaf in that ear.
