Juliette Gordon Low

Juliette Gordon Low suffered from chronic ear infections. At the age of 25, Juliette persuaded the doctor to try an experimental treatment for ear infections, an injection of silver nitrate. This treatment damaged her ear, causing her to lose a great deal of her hearing in that ear.

On her wedding day, a piece of rice became lodged in Juliette's other ear. Since Juliette was leaving on her honeymoon, she did not want to take the time to see a doctor. The rice festered in her ear and became infected so that, by the time she finally went to a doctor, the instrument used to remove the rice made her deaf in that ear.

On October 28, 1979, Juliette Low was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York.

In 1992, a Georgia non-profit group honored Juliette Low as one of the first Georgia Women of Achievement.

Juliette Gordon Low was the founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA. She lived between 1860-1927. She was born on Halloween which certainly adds some brews to the pot!

When she died she had an elaborate funeral and was laid out and buried in her Girl Scout uniform. It is not known what, if any her religious affiliation was. There was some controversy about this as GSUSA was and, in some ways is, more (Interfaith) than the Boy Scouts are, the BSA has regularly assigned Chaplains from the major faiths, the female counterpart does not.

Possibly the Girl Scouts themselves have come up with ghost or seance myths-round the camp fire, more wholesome than, say Goatman or run-ins with sasquatch. Good Ghost hunting!
