Yes, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was initially founded in the American South after the Civil War and was primarily formed by white individuals from rural areas. Many of its members were farmers, laborers, and small business owners who felt threatened by social and economic changes that came with the end of slavery. However, it is important to note that the KKK's membership extended beyond rural areas, and it drew support from various socioeconomic backgrounds over its history.

How did members of the KKK try to intimidate African-Americans?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They used violence to make African-Americans afraid of them. People would be dragged from their homes and beaten, or even hanged. Homes, businesses, and churches were burned or vandalized. Or they could use the threat of violence: a wooden cross would be erected near someone's home and set afire, to warn them not to do anything against the Klan or its beliefs.

The Klan members wore hoods or masks so that they could not be identified, and most of their cowardly acts took place under the cover of night.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Cause they hated blacks.

The Ku Klux Klan formed during the reconstruction era. They were formed for the purpose of resisting Northern occupation and the anti-south Republican Party of the time. It was not originally a specifically racist organization, but by coincidence a lot of it's violence was directed towards blacks because they were the majority the of anti-south republicans at the time. It's later incarnations of the 20's and 60's are more widely recognized as the racial hate group they are known to be today.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Before the American Civil War, black people were treated entirely unfairly, because they were still slaves. The war was about the argument is slavery good or bad. Slaves were thought to be inferior (not as good) as their white masters. They were made work for nothing and only given small portions of food.

Hope that helps :)
