What causes the symptoms of lactose intolerance?

Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose. Lactose intolerance happens when the small intestine does not make enough of the enzyme lactase. Enzymes help the body absorb foods. Not having enough lactase is called lactase deficiency.

Is drinking milk when you're lactose intolerant bad for you?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Theoretically, yes. Many times, people can develop intolerances to certain foods. If you think you have developed lactose intolerance, take a break from dairy for a while, and your body will 'forget' that it doesn't like that stuff. Lactose intolerance can also be helped with probiotics. While antibiotics kill bacteria, probiotics introduce 'good' bacteria into the body. Lactose intolerance could be worsened by the lack of good bacteria (that normally digest the lactose enzyme) in the intestines. for more info http://www.buyprobiotics.net/ for non biased info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probiotics

Does diarrhea due to lactose intolerance cause weight loss?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I haven't been able to find any literature to support my assertions but I can describe my own personal experience. I have noticed that when I eat dairy products along with a normal (healthy) diet I do tend to lose weight. The effects are quantitatively noticeable even after a day as I would lose 1-2 pounds.

I think this is mainly due to the resultant diarrhoea, and consequently the loss of water and the body not absorbing as much of the nutrients as it normally would. Hence the weight loss.

If anyone does find any literature to support this, please post it.

Can you live with lactose intolerance?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. Lactose intolerance is a condition marked by the inability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and milk products. Eating or drinking lactose-containing foods and drinks is not life-threatening, but can produce abdominal cramping, bloating, and diarrhea. The degree of these symptoms is highly variable, and depends in part upon the extent of impairment of an individual's ability to digest lactose. Those that have a mild deficiency in digesting lactose might have no symptoms or only mild symptoms; those with complete inability to absorb lactose might be at the other end of the spectrum with severe cramping, bloating, and diarrhea. In either case, avoiding lactose (eg, by eating rice-based cheeses instead of milk-based cheeses, drinking lactose-free milk products) or supplementing the diet with pills containing lactase (the enzyme lacking in lactose-intolerant individuals) often affords much relief.

Can being pregnant make you lactose intolerant?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Your body naturally filters out lactose but there is another bacteria that cannot be filtered out that is found in milk. and some children are allergic to it and not lactose. can you eat cheese? Cheese and milk have the same lactose but not the same bacteria potency. my daughter was breast fed and if I drank milk she got ill, there is no way she is lactose intolerant, she can eat cheeses and other dairy products. If it had been the lactose the breasts would have eliminated it. It would not have made her sick. She still can not drink milk from a jug. She can have milk that does not require refridgeration. The same thing would apply to an unborn child I would imagine, just think of your body as a filtration system.

What can't people that are lactose intolerance eat?

User Avatar

All dairy products contain an enzyme called lactose, and therefore if you are lactose intolerant, you cannot eat dairy. However, usually a person can eat 1/2 a cup or less of a dairy product if it is accompanied with food, but this is not true for all people.

Is there a pill for lactose intolerant people?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is possible to add a bacteria to the milk that will digest the lactose. It is also possible to use a cottage or yogurt bacteria and change the milk to a more digestible form. You still have to treat the milk, not the person. Perhaps some day chromosome therapy will enable lactose intolerant people to enjoy milk.

Can lactose intolerance cause constipation?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I believe no as I found out 2 weeks ago that I was lactose intolerant and since I have stopped eating foods with lactose in them I have been constipated. Senna tablets have today cleared my 'blockage' but it wasn't pleasant. I believe that this has been the case because the lactose is no longer causing my diarrhea and so I have unfortunately gone 'the other way'. Good luck and if I find any more info I will let you know.

If you are not getting the right amount of calcium and other minerals that are in milk or other things with lactose in it your bones and teeth could become brittle and you could get diseases with bones but I doubt it could really kill you. Try soymilk, coconut, or almond milk.
