It's original scientific name is Coccinellidae, derived from the Latin coccineus, which means scarlet. The name lady bug originated in Great Britain as "lady bird", where it became known as "Our Lady's Bird". This was because Mary (Our Lady), the Queen, in early paintings had often been shown wearing a red cloak, and the spots on the common seven spot lady bug were supposed to be symbols of her seven joys and seven sorrows. In the US, the name was adapted to lady bug because, well, it's a bug, not a bird.

Why do ladybugs have their wings out?

Some potential predators of the ladybug - such as birds, frogs, wasps, spiders, and dragonflies - have learned to associate certain colors used by ladybugs with a bad taste. Ladybugs also have developed a defense known as "reflex bleeding" which is when a small amount of alkaloid toxin is released through the joints of their exoskeleton. It is triggered by a predator attack. Without their defenses against so many predators, the ladybug population would be wiped out.

Can you make food for a ladybug?

You can feed your lady bug a poptart only if it is a certain species, such as the North American Greater Lady bug. Also you have to check if the poptart has no toxic substances to lady bugs. AND PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE POPTART HAS NO BOROX IN IT. Also aluminum wrappings can be very toxic to most species of insects and possibly even to lady bugs. So I, in my professional opinion, strongly recommend that you do NOT feed your lady bug a poptart, unless you want to risk it dying.
