Laura grew up in a Democratic family but Texas always had a very large and powerful Republican Party and a strong far right conservative base. As you may recall it was in Dallas.Texas that the Democratic president John F Kennedy was assassinated and there was a lot of cheering there when he was killed...he. Kennedy, had been warned to avoid Texas due to death threats and this was long before Laura Bush married "W".

In fact some of the Dallas newspapers at the time of the assassination carried right-wing ads displaying photos of Kennedy with the crosshairs of a rifle sniper-scope superimposed over Kennedys head ! That's not what you call a Democratic State.

Lyndon Johnson of Texas succeeded Kennedy and he had the audacity to push for and have the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed through congress, a law which came 100 years after the Civil War, a law guaranteeing Civil Rights to minorities. Texas at the time held a lot of prejudice, not just for Blacks but also for Mexicans,Catholics, foreigners in general and for Democrats and it was the passage of that law which caused millions of Texans who had been nominal Democrats to flee the Democratic Party...the so-called "Dixie-crats"

The Dixie-crats existed also in other deep-south states, they were nominal Democrats who were conservative to be sure but voted Democratic because they were still, after 100 years, fighting the Civil War and they hated the Republican Party because Abraham Lincoln had been ( the first) a Republican President and he had ended slavery in the USA.
