Leif Ericson

Leif Eriksson was born in 960 A.D. in Iceland. Leif was the son of the famous explorer, Erik the Red. But Leif was not an only child, he had two brothers, Torvald and Torstein, and Torvald is famous (but not as famous as Leif). Leif's childhood he had a shall (a slave like person), but he treated him like a brother and they did almost everything together.

Around the age of ten, Leif had to move to Greenland because his father was banned from Iceland and he couldn't move to Norway because his father was previously banned from there to. Also at the age of ten, he got a very expensive dagger, which he kept all the time and never lost.

He also brought crew members who had already crewed the very same boat to within sight of the new world and no doubt some of his crew from his trips elsewhere, including Norway. And some cattle who almost certainly only had a one way ticket.

Leif was believed to have been born around AD 970, son of the famous Eric the Red. Some think that he was born in 960 to more than 970, but he died at 1020. That means that he was 50 when he died, but some say that he was 90, meaning that he died in 1060! Records are kept in Icelandic 'sagas'.

He sailed to Norway to visit King Olaf I, which he did.

Actually it was Leif's dad who discovered Greenland. Leif discovered North America, though really he was following a course set by an Icelander. Leif did create a settlement in North America so many say he discovered it. After all the first guy felt it was too risky to go ashore, so he was just the first recorded European to see North America, not really the same as landing and "discovering".

He also discovered a stranded ship and rescued its crew of 14 people.

There are two versions. In the first, he was already aware of North America's existence, because it had been spotted years before by a man named Bjarni Herjolfs. In the second, he was sailing for Greenland, but sailed too far south, and ended up in North America.
