"After MASH" was a short lived spin-off of "MASH 4077" that brought Colonel Potter, Max Klinger, and Father Francis Mulcahy back together in civilian life. The characters were depicted as having trouble adjusting to civilian life after the war. Sherman Potter was a bored retiree. Klinger was back in the USA with his Korean wife, but could not find permanent employment, and was first shown in a court room asking a judge for a break, due to his postwar difficulties. Father Mulcahy was completely deaf after his injury in the last episode of MASH 4077, and had developed a drinking problem. The story line depicts the three characters working in a hospital, again, coming together to support each other as they rebuild their civilian lives. "After MASH" was a lackluster comedy that lacked the great writers that made"MASH" such a success. It ran from September 26, 1983 to December 11, 1984.

The character of Max Klinger, played by Jamie Farr, was introduced in the 4th episode, "Chief Surgeon Who?" as a reluctant draftee, trying to get a "Section 8" (psychiatric discharge) by wearing women's clothing. Cross-dressing, however, wasn't Klinger's only ploy, as he surprised and delighted audiences by showing up on guard duty stark naked in front of a visiting General (Sorrell Booke). As I understand it, Klinger was supposed to have been a one time guest spot, but the response from appreciative audiences prompted the powers that be to write the Klinger character into the show again. Mr. Farr reprised his role as Klinger, creating the beloved character has entertained audiences for all these years.

well, although MASH is not always considered a game (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital), here is the version I always played:

MASH is basically a really stupid fortune-telling game.

1. Draw a good-sized square in the middle of a piece of paper (3 inches? it really doesn't matter). This will be drawn inside of later.

2. Write letters M-A-S-H above the square. M=mansion, A=apartment, S=shack, H=house. This determines what kind of house you will live in.

3. to the left of the square, have a partner (whose fortune you are telling) pick 3 cars (2 they want and 1 they don't want) and write them down

4. Below that (still to the left of the square) write the names of 3 guys/gals (again, 2 they want and 1 they don't--this theme continues through the categories).

5. Below the square, write 3 countries/places to live in

6. To the right of the square, write 3 numbers (how many kids)

7. Below that (still to the right of the square) write annual income

So far, you should have a big empty square with 6 words running down the left and right sides, MASH above, and three words below.

8. Have your friend close his/her eyes. Start drawing a spiral inside the square. When the friend says STOP, stop drawing and count the number of layers your spiral has (if you were to draw a line through the center of the spiral, how many lines would it pass through?). This will be used in the next step.

9. Starting at the M of MASH, go around the square (clockwise) and count to whatever number you got in step 8 (if the number was 7, you would end up crossing off the 7th item, which would be the third line down on the right side if you counted correctly)

10. Continue going around the circle, crossing out words as you go. When there is only one word left in a category (guys/gals, cars, etc.) you circle it. This is their fate in that category. When you come to a circled word, you skip it in your counting, just as a crossed out word would be skipped.

After much counting, crossing out, circling, and chortling, you have your friend's fate. Not really. But you get the point. I hope that wasn't TOO confusing. It's really hard to explain without a picture.
