it mean that they traded with there parent's country. for an example the new France gave France fish, fur and wood and the France gave the new France manufactured goods

Between 1600 and 1800 most of the states of Western Europe were heavily influenced by a policy usually known as mercantilism. This was essentially an effort to achieve economic unity and political control.

Adam Smith believed Mercantilism was destructive to the economy because it drew wealth out of the markets and into the hands of the royalty, who spent it on expensive imports and disallowed a little to trickle down to the poor. He wanted freer market policies that would allow all people to start companies and create prosperity for the world.

According to mercantilism, the colonies were required to engage in two general behaviors: (1) The colonies were locked into exclusive trade between the colonies and the metropole and were not allowed to trade with any other nation or colony. (2) No manufactures or complex goods could be made in the colonial territory. As a result the colonies would provide wealth to the metropole by trading their natural resources for less than they would be worth and by buying manufactures for much more money.

After mercantilism, Europe later became dominated my what is termed a social market economy. With the advent of the EU and pressure from the u.s. and Asian power rising, this system is being tempered (says the optimist) or dismantled (says the cynic) by free-market capitalism. This is most evident in France where large-scale reforms in social security schemes are underway in an effort to maintain economic solubility.

England viewed its North American colonies as an economic resource, colonies provided raw materials, made products out of it, and sold it back for a higher price go make a profit.

It's OK early game if you have enough cities, since a free specialist in each city can be quite a bonus (especially if you have Representation). However, after the discover of Astronomy, foreign trade routes become essential (provided you have enough coastal cities). Free Market or State Property will be much more effective at this point.

...unless you're not talking about the video game Civilization 4, in which case, man, I don't know.

Britain had something to do with mercantilism, and they used the colonists to benefit themselves.
