Yes, you can. All you need is a bucket and a lava source. These sources can be found underground in mines. When you find lava, hold the bucket in your hand by selecting it on the action bar, and then right click the lava.

Then you right click again to place the lava. But be careful! Lava is very dangerous, and it can kill you or burn down your house. Trust me, I have done it ;)

All you need to do is break 4 pieces of snow on the ground with a shovel (any shovel will work) and place the 4 snowballs in a square on the crafting grid.

You will need to build the Nether Portal by collecting at least 8 Obsidian. (If you are including the corners, it will be 12.) Obsidian can be found deep underground where it is at lava level and can be mined by using a Diamond Pickaxe. When you gather the Obsidian, place four vertically, then place another four Obsidian two blocks away from the pillar you made. If you did not get the Obsidian for the corners, then I recommend using dirt to be substitute of the corners, then place two Obsidian from the dirt to the next horizontally. Repeat the step on the bottom. Try a mod. You could use InvEdit or SPC (Single Player Commands).

One of the Minecraft files that are required to start it may be corrupted. Uninstall and reinstall Minecraft and see if that fixes it.

Try clicking options in the log in menu and do "Force Update". If that doesnt work, try going into your files, search "%appdata% and delete your .minecraft folder. Then go to minecraft again and it should re-install all the updates.

There is no way to find out how long you have played, unless you were using a timer. However, when in a Minecraft world, you can go to the menu, and then go to statistics. Here, you can see all sorts of facts about your world, including how long you've been on that specific world.

It doesn't matter which difficulty setting you are playing on. The seed that the world is in generates the dungeons in different areas. Some seeds generate dungeons that are surface-level.
