Lighting a beacon is pretty easy. You may or may not have thought that when you place a Diamond, Iron Ingot, Gold Ingot, or Emerald, it would light a beacon, but in fact you need you make a 3x3 square made out of Diamond, Iron, Gold, or Emerald Blocks, and place the beacon in the middle, wait maybe 1 or 2 seconds, and it will shine a huge line of light about 300 blocks high

get a workbench by getting four wooden planks.

go to inventory crafting and the wood in ALL four boxes.you have a workbench.

right click to place down. right click on workbench to open it.

get two sticks and three wooden planks

what to do:

put a stick in the middle box

put another stick in the bottom row middle box

now put your three wooden planks on the top row

It could be either Diamond Ore (bright blue spots) or Lapis Lazuli Ore (darker blue blocks).

Put it on top of a pyramid of iron, gold, diamond, emerald, or lapis blocks (I don't know if you can use redstone). Each segment of the pyramid must be made of the same blocks, but separate segments can be made of different things. You can see in the beacon GUI how many layers are needed for a beacon power. Even when not completely activated (like you don't make it give you a power), the beacon will still emit light. I think the bigger the pyramid is, the longer range the beacon has.

When a block of stone is destroyed with a pickaxe, it drops one block of cobblestone per stone block destroyed; to answer, you will need to craft any tier of pickaxe - wooden, iron, gold or diamond all destroy stone blocks - and find either exposed stone blocks in the world, or dig through dirt blocks until you find stone blocks.
