While smelting would generally refer to refining ore into metal, many other products can be made through a furnace.

They are:

Raw Porkchop -> Cooked Porkchop

Raw Beef -> Steak

Raw Chicken -> Cooked Chicken

Raw Fish -> Cooked Fish

Iron Ore -> Iron Ingot

Gold Ore -> Gold Ingot

Diamond Ore -> Diamond*

Lapis Lazuli Ore -> Lapis Lazuli*

Redstone Ore -> Redstone Dust*

Coal Ore -> Coal*

Sand -> Glass

Cobblestone -> Stone

Clay -> Clay Brick

Wood -> Charcoal

Cactus -> Cactus Green(dye)

*The Ores marked can only be obtained legitimately through mods, creative mode, or a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch. It is really not necessary to smelt these, as they can be broken by a non Silk Touch pickaxe and will drop the "refined" product. In the case of Redstone Dust and Lapis Lazuli, it is actually LESS efficient to smelt them, as breaking them will yield multiple products.

The answer is right on the minecraft.net site genius. It is an out of date classic version of minecraft, lag-o-saurus as I would say. Get minecraft, it isnt that expensive, unless your REALLY poor to the point where you probably stole the computer your using to ask this.

Not at all. Anyone who says it is probably hasn't played the game. If you look up the official website (related links) you'll see that they're legit. They have the pocket edition in the app store, on the PC, and they're coming soon to XBOX 360! Therefore Minecraft isn't spam.

Google a Minecraft skin website, like the skindex, and then you can browse the different skins in it, and download one that pleases you. Then, you go on minecraft.net and go to your profile, and upload your skin.

I had the same problem. I solved it by going into privacy settings on the account, and doing a custom setting. I allowed everything and opted into everything. It is now downloading just fine! ;D

You can use a stair block, and put a signpost on either side of it, to create something that looks like a chair. Also, if you place a piston facing the sky, and put a redstone signal running under it, it will make it look like a saloon chair. The more simpler way is to place a slab(Half-block) on the fence post, and put signpost on 3 sides of the slab(Except for the front side). This way is simple and easy cost of materials but doesn't look realistic as the piston saloon-chair.

You can't make villagers without mods. They spawn naturally in so-called NPC villages randomly placed on the map.

Wooden doors in Minecraft are easier to get than iron (steel) doors. Most people use the wooden doors for their first house, since the materials to craft a wooden door is much easier to obtain than iron(steel) doors. Wooden doors can be opened by right or left clicking, while iron(steel) doors cannot be opened neither left or right clicking.

To open an iron(steel) door, it has to be powered by redstone. Which means to make a simple user-friendly iron(steel) door, place a button or a lever next to the iron(steel) door so it can be opened easily. Iron(steel) doors also has a better blast resistance than wooden doors (As you may have already guessed by the materials it uses).

The similarities between them is that both can be powered by redstone. But the bad point about wooden doors is that if you create a redstone circuit which powers the door kept to be closed, you can change the circuit by just right or left clicking the wooden door. But since iron(steel) doors cannot be opened unless triggered by redstone, iron(steel) doors are usually made for adventure map/servers that requires redstone circuits.
