Put something on the top square, and it might make a potion. There are currently about 500 different potions you can make, so have fun and experiment!

Leaf blocks break if there is no wooden log block within three or four squares, it just represents them decaying after the tree's wood is removed. On a practical side, it's a nice way for the game to clean up for you instead of making you remove them all by yourself. If you are trying to place leaf blocks decoratively, make sure they are positioned close to wooden log blocks.
