[EDIT] The Mini Cooper S (ie supercharged version) suggests Premium (91 octane) but this is a highly debated point on the internet. After much reading the general consensus was to run at least 2 tanks of regular and note your mileage, then step up to the next level of octane and do the same thing. Keep increasing fuel grades until your mileage stops improving. Note that when doing this you should try to keep your driving style constant (both speed wise and highway/city amounts). Personally I'm playing it safe and sticking with premium.

I bought my 2004 (automatic) Mini used in 2007. It had about 40,000 miles. 17 months into the 18 month warranty I had purchased, the entire transmission had to be replaced. Thankfully, I had the warranty, the job cost the warranty company about $8,000. At the time, the car had only about 55,000 miles. At 70,000 I experienced power steering failure on and off. I've priced a power steering pump online, and it appears to be about a $600-$1,000 part. At this point the power assist only seems to work for 5 minutes at a time, about once a week. At 75,000 I tried to start the car one morning, and it wouldn't turn over. I heard a clicking noise, and the lights began flickering and windows rolled down in time with the clicking noice. From what I see online, this may be a battery issue. At this point, I'm really frustrated with my Mini. I loved driving her for the first year! In my opinion, I'd say you can get 50,000 miles out of a Mini before it's time to think about getting a new car. wow, thanks for the help! I was thinking about buying a mini...really appreciate it.
