"We Are the Team of 18,000" was the slogan used by the Wild for the playoffs after winning its Northwest Division title in 2008. The 18,000 refers to the fans that are in the arena in a sold out game.

When owner of the Minnesota North Stars, Norm Green, decided to move the franchise to Dallas, the state of Minnesota was left without an NHL team. Minnesota is probably the most hockey mad market in the USA and the NHL was determined to put a team back there as soon as new ownership could be found. A new ownership group applied and a franchise was awarded. The new team, named the Wild, started play in the 2000 season and has become one of the most successful expansion teams ever.
When owner Norm Green of the Minnesota North Stars moved his team to Dallas, the NHL had every intention of eventually putting a team back in Minnesota. So in 1997, they granted an expansion franchise to a group from Minnesota. The team name WILD was chosen from a list in a name the team contest. The team's first season on ice was in 2000/2001. The Wild has become a success both on the ice and at the gate, where they've sold out every game since the team started playing.
