Do monkeys have nests?

Parrots are generally not nest-builders like other birds are. They shelter in hollows in trees or, for ground-dwelling parrots, hollows dug out in the ground or made in dry heath. The only parrot which builds a nest of sticks is the Quaker Parrot, also known as the Monk Parakeet, of South America.

Can monkeys be gay?

This is something I pulled from straightdope.com:

Is there such a thing as a gay animal?

Dear Cecil:

Living in a heavily gay neighborhood as I do, I have seen my share of leather freaks, transvestites, and lesbian couples making out at the beach.

My question is, are such carryings-on a uniquely human phenomenon? Do our friends the animals ever get unnatural urges? Do monkeys, cats, dogs, etc., ever frequent gay bars, collect Barbra Streisand records, or speak with a lisp?

Please, Cecil, I have a desperate need to know these things.

Dear Straight:

You asked for it, pal. Herewith the contents of my entire file on kinky animal habits. Kinky monkey habits, actually. Warning: it ain't pretty. Read at your own risk.

(1) There really are such things as gay monkeys.

Animals usually engage in homosexual behavior only when crowded, deprived of normal heterosexual contact, or otherwise subjected to stress. However, Erwin and Maple (1976) describe two male rhesus monkeys who lived together for 19 months and engaged in "reciprocal mounting with anal penetration."

When paired individually with females, the male monkeys would exhibit conventional heterosexual behavior. However, when the two were put in a cage together with a female, they would hassle her and direct all their affections toward each other.

(2) Monkeys make use of artificial instruments of lust. Ford and Beach (1951) tell of a female chimpanzee of low morals and even lower intelligence who attempted to achieve carnal union with a mango.

Her technique consisted of placing the mango upon her external genitalia and awaiting the arrival of sexual bliss. When after some moments it became apparent that this might be a long time coming, the chimp placed the mango on the floor, sat on it, and twisted and rubbed against it with vigor.

Bingham (1928) reports a somewhat more imaginative chimp who availed herself of a leafy twig, which she installed below decks and then rubbed against the bars of her cage.

(3) Some male monkeys can (and do) lick their own ... oh, never mind. Spider monkeys also use their prehensile tails to stimulate themselves.

(4) Monkeys engage in oral sex, mutual masturbation, and other similar activities.

I have a photograph here from a book of sex research (a perfectly sober volume, let me assure you) showing a male gorilla administering oral gratification to his lady.

He does this by climbing up on her thighs, leaning down, and perching on his head. The effect is not as graceful as it might be. A younger male gorilla observes with interest from the sidelines.

Elsewhere in the book we find detailed renderings of various positions from the monkey Kama Sutra, drawn from life by dedicated researchers. No doubt about it, zoologyoffers some fascinating career opportunities.

How many legs does a lacewing have?

Insects normally have 7 legs; 3 on each side and 1 in the middle that is present due to evolution. Prior to this evolutionary step, insects faced being consumed in their masses by tribal mexicans, believing in the tradition of 'shanking' off one leg and roasting it over an open fire, often serving it with marinades such as tomato ketchup and pesto. The insects were then left to bleed to death, but they evolved so they could fight off such tribes. The mexicans then turned to an alternate source of nutrition; the infamous taco.

What is a monkeys gestational period?

It depends on the species, temperature, and feeding but tarantulas generally have gestation periods (insemination to eggs laid) of several months. 3-9 months is typical. After the eggs are laid in an egg sac, it is a matter of weeks (about 2-6) before the young spiders hatch, undergo a first molt, and are ready to leave the sac and eat on their own. This is also dependant on the species and temperature.

Which vaccinations do you need for a monkey bite?

It depends if the monkey was wild or in a zoo/pet setting. Usually the vaccines given are Tetanus, and Rabies post-exposure shots. If the animal was in a zoo or pet then chance it has rabies are slim to none. Personally I would forgo the rabies shots. There has never been a reported case in the us of a primate with Rabies. The monkey would have to exposed to rabies first just as in humans. Tetanus shots are given more so to prevent infection from dirt which may enter the bite area, not so much the actual bite. Really the most important thing when bitten by a monkey, or any animal really, is to keep the bite wound clean, and away from dirt. If the bite wound is severe doctor will prescribe an antibiotic such as Amoxicillin.

If the animal was wild then the risk of carrying disease is slightly higher, but usually people are given the above shots and are fine. Its really not that serious. The only monkey which may potentially carry a virus is macaques who sometimes carry Herpes B. But it is very difficult to transmit, as the animal must be under severe stress to transmit it. Again there has never been a case in the US of macs shedding herpes B in the pet or zoo sector. Only 2 cases in research labs where animals are sometimes under severe stress.

How strong is a ape?

A study done in the 1920s found that Chimps were four times stronger than able-bodied college football players. The 2009 research paper "The Strength of Great Apes and the Speed of Humans" by Prof. Alan Walker writes:

"Bauman (1923, 1926) showed that adult male and female chimpanzees held long in captivity were much stronger than any of several fit young football players when normalized for body mass. He had the animals (when they felt like it) and the students pull on a calibrated metal loop dynamometer. The female recorded a two-handed pull of 1,260 pounds, while the male recorded a one-handed pull of 847 pounds. The strongest student managed a one-handed pull of 210 pounds and a two-handed pull of 491 pounds. When normalized for body mass, this meant that the chimpanzees were more than four times as strong as the men."

Prof. Walker theorizes that the reason Chimps are so much strong is because they have less grey matter in their spinal cord, meaning there are less muscle neurons to activate small muscle groups. On top of that, they do not have the types of biological limiters that humans have because they do not have as many fine motor control muscles to protect. This ultimately means that they can access larger sections of muscle at once.

Gorillas are probably twice as strong as Chimps. I've seen estimates of them being eight to nine times stronger than humans. I couldn't even begin to imagine what it would be like to be that strong.
