What is the difference between brandy and moonshine?
Brandy is a distilled spirit made from fermented fruit juice, primarily grapes, and is typically aged in wooden casks, which imparts distinct flavors and smoothness. In contrast, moonshine is an unaged, high-proof spirit traditionally made from grains, fruits, or sugar, often produced illegally and associated with homemade distillation. While both are distilled beverages, their ingredients, production methods, and aging processes differ significantly.

Note that licensed distillers can produce a product identical in every way to the illegal home-distilled product except that it was produced by a licensed distillery (and that taxes were properly paid on it), and even call it "Moonshine" if they like, and that's perfectly legal. But distillation of alcohol by anyone but a licensed distiller is illegal, and licenses are essentially never given for home/hobby distillation.
Moonshine is illegal liquor. So you're carrying something you know is illegal, and your biggest concern is whether or not you can get on an airplane with it?
Um, leaving the whole "illegal" bit aside... you should check with the airline, but in general you can probably check up to a gallon and a half of liquor under 140 proof. Anything over that tends to be prohibited. Low alcohol content booze (beer and wine) generally isn't subject to the gallon and a half limitation.

In Colorado it is NOT legal to distill alcohol for personal consumption. The act falls in a category called "Petty Offenses." There are two alcohol distillation permit options to satisfy Federal requirements. The first is a Federal Distilled Spirits Permit. This is the permit obtained by major distillers (i.e. Jack Daniels), and are generally outside the reach of an individual.
The second type of permit is the federal fuel alcohol permit. It is intended for individuals that wish to distil alcohol as a fuel (not for drinking).
The question asked about Colorado law, but it must be understood that Federal law will apply to the states as well. Distilling alcohol for human consumption without a Federal Distilled Spirits Permit is a violation of Federal law. The term "highly illegal" has no actual meaning under the law, but one may find the law listed in 26 U.S.C. 5601 & 5602, and the penalty listed as a fine of not more than $10,000, or imprisonment for not more than 5 years, or both.

Is it illegal to make moonshine?
In most countries, simply making "moonshine" (distilled spirits produced without a license from the government) is in itself illegal. I honestly don't know if giving it away is a separate crime or not; I do know that you're allowed to produce and give away fermented but not distilled alcoholic beverages (i.e. beer and wine), but not to sell them.
Moonshine is illegally made alcohol. During part of the 20s alcohol was illegal because of prohibition, but people still wanted to drink. Therefore they drank moonshine.
Well, it isn't very high actually. Most recipes call for about 1 gallon of cider, 1 gallon of juice and a liter of 'shine, also lots of sugar and cinnamon. starting out moonshine is 150-190 proof usually. Just going off the dilution of alcohol to the cider/juice mix, Id say it wouldn't be anymore than 20-25 proof (about 10-12.5% ABV). So really, it's like drinking a wine cooler.

How did moonshine kill people?
A study of moonshine or illegal distilled spirits produced at 48 different stills found that 43 of the 48 samples had lead levels ranging from five to 599 parts per billion (ppb). Over half the samples contained lead levels exceeding federal water guidelines of 15 ppb. For regular moonshine consumers, that poses a risk of lead poisoning, but even occasional consumption carries some risk. Lead serves no function in the body but lead poisoning can cause memory loss, brain swelling, paralysis, and even
death. About 80% of all adult lead poisoning deaths are related to moonshine consumption. The study was conducted by Dr. Christopher Holstege, Director of the Division of Medical Toxicology of Virginia Health System. Hundreds of thousands of gallons of moonshine are produced annually in the U.S. The illegal production is highly profitable and continues because of the heavy taxation of legally-produced distilled spirits. Taxes constitute well over half the price of a typical bottle of spirits.
**NOTE** While the above research is no doubt true, the lead poisoning comes from the still rather than the moonshine. To save money and time, some moonshiners solder their stills with and build them using lead, which alcohol can eat away at which is why it comes out in the finished product. If a still is built correctly (such as with copper or stainless steel and strictly food-grade materials), there is virtually no risk of lead poisoning. Instead of soldering, use an old quick fix to make the still air tight. Mix flour and water until it forms a paste then apply it to any loose joints. As the still heats up, the flour and water will harden, which can then be easily chipped off after distillation is complete.
Data on moonshine deaths is hard to record, but more often than not, the dangers associated with moonshine are due to carelessness whether it be using lead or simply drinking too much. And I'm sure in some instances, the dangers of moonshine are exaggerated because of its taboo in most parts of American society. If you are responsible and do your research before you jump right into making moonshine, you should have nothing to worry about.
