Sir Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay were the first who are known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. There were others who earlier climbed part of the way up Mount Everest, such as UK climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine who made an attempt in 1924 to reach the summit - an attempt from which they never returned alive. Because they died, it is unknown whether or not they succeeded.
The first offical people to reach the summit of Mount Everest is Edmund Hillary and his climbing partner Tenzing Norgay, they stood on the highest summit in the world at 11.30 in the morning of the 29th May 1953.

Steve Backshall is a rock climber and mountaineer, does adventure races, fell runs and endurance sports. He has climbed such peaks as Cho Oyu 8201m, Cholatse and is an advanced Himalayan Expedition leader.

But he has not climbed Mount Everest.

The higher you get the harder it is to breathe. Mount Everest is 8848 meters tall. Therefore it is in a zone called the "death zone" (the death zone is 8000 meters and above). Only 14 mountains are in this zone. Most climbers use oxygen from around 7000 meters to 8000 meters. But others try without. The first two climbers to do this were Reinhold Messner and Peter Habler. Mount Everest is also in line with jet stream winds. This causes the summit to be untouchable most of the year.

It is difficult to predict the weather on Mount Everest. However one thing can be safely predicted the weather can change in an instant and can get worse as you reach closer to the top of the world.

The region above 25,000 feet (7,600 meters) is called the death zone. The reason for this name is because nothing lives at that altitude or above and no human can survive long there due to the lack of oxygen in the thin air.

In 2011 Bhakta Kumar Rai from Nepal spent 32 hours on top of Mount Everest. He reached the top at 5:30am on May 20th and stayed there till 1pm the next day. In that time he mediated for 27 hours for world peace.

It is thought that the summit of Mount Everest started at the bottom of the ancient Tethys Sea, the motion of the Indian sub continental plate and the urasian continental plate colliding, about 30 - 50 million years ago, caused the mountain to rise up and become the highest mountain on the Earth.

Due to the fact that the climate on Mount Everest is so harsh, it is no surprise that very little lives on the mountain itself. No humans live on the slopes of Mount Everest. However, there are some things that have been found on Everest. Of course, the vast majority of these things have been found at the bottom of the mountain, but some are surprisingly much higher up.

The Euophrys omnisuperstes is a small jumping spider that lives 22,000ft up Mount Everest.

The Bar-Headed Goose has been seen flying around Everest at up to thirty thousand feet.

Another bird that has been known to survive on Everest is the Chough, this bird has been seen as high as 7,920 meters.

The youngest person to climb Mount Everest was Jordan Romero aged 13 years 10 months 10 days old on the 22nd May 2010.

This would be impossible to answer here as there has been around 5,000 people from all over the world have reached the summit of Mount Everest to date.

The main reason people want to climb Mount Everest is to live out their dream. Some do it for the adventure and thrill, others do it because they are paid as a guide and some see how far they can push their body to the limits.

Up to the end of 2014 a total of 418 woman have reached the highest summit in the world, Mount Everest. However, out of the 418 woman 6 had died on the way back down the mountain after reaching the summit.

The three formations, or units, which make up the geology of Mount Everest are divided into sections. Geologists have named these, from the bottom to the summit respectively, the Rongbuk Formation, the North Col Formation and the Qomolangma Formation. These sections, or units, are divided by a low-angle fault, or a 'detachment', each one being forced over the next to form a, sort of, zigzag pattern.
