The death toll of the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora is difficult to determine. It is estimated that at least 10,000 were killed directly by the eruption while 50,000-90,000 died due to indirect regional impacts. The effect on global climate is estimated to have killed 90,000 people. This adds up to a total of 150,000-190,000 deaths due to all direct and indirect effects.

What was the result of the eruption of Mount Tambora?

User Avatar

That such an eruption changes the climate of the entire planet. When there's a large volcanic eruption somewhere, deep volcanic ash covers an area of several tens of miles surrounding the volcano. Airborne ash settles to the ground rather quickly - several days or weeks. So this is a local event. However the sulfur gas from a large eruption is propelled into the stratosphere and beyond, above the clouds where rain and wind can scrub these contaminants from the air, remain there for 1-2 years. Sulfuric gas combines with water molecules to form an aerosol that acts like a veil covering the entire planet preventing most of the sunlight from reaching the ground. Hence the earth looses 1-2 growing seasons as photosynthesis stops and crops are unable to grow. This occurred in 1815, a year known as the year without a summer, when the world faced its last subsistence crisis, or famine. Tens of thousands people and an untold number of animals and livestock died in America and Europe when Tambora had that large eruption. Now, all these things happen during a supervolcanic eruption too - except that the world would loose between 8 and 10 growing seasons, instead of only 2. There are at least a dozen such supervolcanoes worldwide (three in the U.S.) in which these conditions would occur should a large eruption happen.

What is the closest city to mount tambora?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The two nearest cities are Dompu and Bima. But there are also villages on the slopes, including: to the east is Sanggar village, to the northwest are Doro Peti and Pesanggrahan villages, and to the west is Calabai village.

Mt. Tambora is the highest peak on the island of Sumbawa in Indonesia. In the early 1810s, Tambora began to rumble and set off many large quakes. But, the eruption of 10 April 1815.had a volcanic explosivity index (VEI) of 7. It caused a major worldwide change in weather known as "The Summer that Never Was". The volcanic ash encircled the globe for several years. In 1815, it snowed through the summer in the northern hemisphere; crops failed; animals perished; people starved or got sick and died. Families had numerous deaths within 6 mos to 1 year span of time. And this occurred before people understood that ash travels in the atmosphere--so most people did not know why the climate and weather suddenly changed.

*In one of my ancestral lines, a father, son, and 2 daughters all died within 6 months of the April eruption because of the bitter cold and lack of food.

Is mount tambora an nonexplosive volcano?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes Tambora can be an explosive volcano. The large 1815 eruption blew nearly 4,000 feet off the top of the mountain and was Earth's biggest volcanic explosion of the past 10,000 years. But it can also have smaller non-explosive eruptions like the one in 1967.

How did Mount Tambora change the world?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

OK. i don't no exactly how Tambora change the world but here are some theories.

the world changed during that time (in 1815-1816) because all because of its explosion and "the year without summer" (look it up if u dont know what that is).

The World changed with the loses of 92,000 people dieing and animals slaughtered to feed the humans in indonesia.

this event changed the world by with people suffering this pain for several days. or even a year with its volcanic ash everywhere. it changed the earth by blocking the sun and making the atmosphere stuffy.

those are 3 theories of how did mount tambora change the world.

this was answered by a freaking 6th grader, if in a higher level grade...shunnnnn! lol jk
