What is muscle tissue?

Muscle tissue accounts for nearly one-half of the total body weight and consists of three distinct subtypes:

• striated (skeletal) muscle

• smooth (visceral) muscle, and

• cardiac muscle

Each type of muscle cell is designed to perform one basic function.

Striated muscle is attached to bones that move the skeleton.

Smooth muscle is located in the walls of hollow internal structures, such as the intestines and blood vessels, allowing such organs to expand and contract.

Cardiac muscle occurs only in the heart, where it forms the walls and enables the heart to pump blood. When viewed under the light microscope, striated muscle cells appear long and thread-like with alternating light and dark cross strips called striations. In contrast, smooth muscle has no striations, Cardiac muscle cells, each of which has a nucleus, are slightly striated. Each cardiac muscle cell tends to divide into a "y" or "x" shape, so that it has more than two ends and joins more than two other cells, i.e., it intercalates. The ends of one cardiac muscle cell are separated from adjoining cells by a band called an intercalated disk.

Unlike skeletal muscle, smooth muscle and cardiac muscle are controlled involuntarily, i.e., an individual cannot stop or start the muscle action.

Over the last few months my grip as weakened I also have muscle spasms and cramps regularly Can anyone please advise?

If this helps just one person I'll be happy. I began getting cramps in my legs and feet years ago, I've tried drinking more water, stretching and taking supplements such as calcium and potassium. Nothing seemed to work, and the pain was getting excruciating. At night my feet would go into such extreme spasms that my big toe would visibly pull away from my other toes. These spasms have lasted up to four hours at night, alternating from one foot to the other, and leaving me exhausted. The solution is a golf ball. Using a golf ball as a massage implement has helped tremendously. Sit down, put the ball under your foot and start rolling. I've found it not only helps the foot spasms I experience, but it also helps the leg spasms that I've suffered with for so long. I've also discovered that I can actually feel knots in my feet as I'm rolling the ball around. Your feet will be extremely sore for a couple of days after you use it the first time, but there will be a huge improvement. Don't forget to drink water, it's important. I drink a full glass around 6:00PM so I'm well hydrated through the night. Good luck!

Does anyone know a really good bicep workout routine?

You don't need to isolate the biceps, you'll end up getting big arms and nothing else. you'll end up looking like all the other idiots in the chain store air conditioned gyms. stick to the main compound exercises, squats, deadlifts, benchpress and pull ups. progress to cleans and other dynamic lifts. It's what all the sprinters do, but hey who wants a body like that ;)

if you want to do a bit more on bi's do chins instead of pull ups. But those four exercises will get your whole body to grow. unless of course you want to look like an idiot with big arms but can't actually do anything.
