Is there an easy way to remember how and where musical terms are used like beats measures notes etc?

There's a story about a man who asks a musician he meet on the street, "How do you get to Carnegie Hall." The musician replied "Practice, man, practice!"

There are so many musical terms and conventions that it is impossible to remember them all. I've been playing for decades, and still see things I don't recognize. On the other hand, with all that experience, I've learned many things that I originally thought would be impossible to learn.

My best advice is to get a simple music dictionary and a simple theory book or two with indexes. When you run across something you don't know, look it up. You'll be surprised how much you'll learn and how quickly.

What is an appoggiatura?

An appoggiatura is a type of musical ornament. It is like a 'leaning note' and is written as a grace note printed in small character, without a line through the stem, prefixed to a principal note and generally takes about half the time value of this note.

It is not to be confused with an acciaccatura, sometimes called a 'crushed note' which takes up very little time value of the principal note it is prefixed to. You can tell the difference between them as an acciaccatura has a line through the stem but is also written in small print as a grace note.
