On September 13, 1962, Deke Slayton called Neil Armsrtong and asked him if he would like to fly for NASA. Armstrong said "Yes" and his selection was announced to the public 4 days later.

Armstrong was part of the second group of astronauts selected. The "New Nine" consisted of Armstrong, Jim Lovell, Elliot See, Frank Borman, Jim McDivitt, Ed White, Tom Stafford, Pete Conrad, and John Young. See died before making a spaceflight. Armstrong, Lovell, Borman, Stafford, Conrad and Young all flew to the moon. Only Armstrong, Conrad and Young actually walked on the moon. The other 9 moonwalkers all came from later astronaut classes.

There have up to two people on the moon at the same time, but twelve American men have walked on the lunar surface.

20th July 1969 was the day that Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The first human being walked on the moon - his name was Neil Armstrong.

He wanted to say something appropriate for the occasion. Since the beginning of time, people have wondered what it would be like to walk on the moon. Neil Armstrong fulfilled not only Kennedy's goal, but the vision of the ages. Armstrong claims to have thought of the line just before exiting the Lunar Module, however, his brother has recently said that Neil told him what he was going to say a month before he actually set foot on the lunar surface.

Neil's exact words were "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." Unfortunately, the communication between the crew and mission control was not the best and the "A" was not heard by the world when he said it. Armstrong said in his biography that he definitely said the "A" and that the line makes no sense without the "A".

It is also worth noting that Armstrong received thousands of suggestions on what his first words should be from people all over the world before the Apollo 11 mission. He did an excellent job coming up with just the right ones all by himself.

Neil Alden Armstrong, an American astronaut, was the first person to walk on the Moon. He was also a naval aviator, test pilot, aerospace engineer, and university professor. He was born August 5, 1930. He died August 25, 2012 at age 82 after complications from heart bypass surgery.

Before his days as an astronaut, Armstrong served in the Korean War as an officer in the US Navy. He then attended Purdue University and earned a bachelor's degree. After that, he was a test pilot at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics High-Speed Flight Station, logging over 900 flights. That is now known as the Dryden Flight Research Center. At the University of Southern California, he completed graduate studies.

In 1962, Armstrong joined the NASA Astronaut Corps. In 1966, he made his first space flight as command pilot of Gemini 8. That made him NASA's first civilian astronaut to fly in space. On this mission, along with pilot David Scott, he performed the first docking of two spacecraft.

On his second and last spaceflight which was in July 1969, Armstrong was the mission commander of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Because of that mission, President Richard Nixon awarded Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin the Presidential Medal of Freedom. President Jimmy Carter presented Armstrong the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978. Then in 2009, Armstrong and his former crew mates received the Congressional Gold Medal.

After leaving NASA, Armstrong taught at the University of Cincinnati. He moved to Lebanon, Ohio at that point, and was young enough that his son competed on the high school wrestling team.
