A few months later, a job opened up at Edwards and Armstrong was hired there. He worked as a test pilot for 7 years before applying for astronaut training at NASA. He was accepted in spite of the fact that he turned his application in a week late. Armsrtong's first space flight occurred 4 years later. On July 20, 1969, he became the first person to walk on the moon.
