Night (book)

The appelplatz in the book Night is a courtyard in the concentration camps where prisoners were assembled for daily roll call and inspections. It was a place of intense hardship and suffering, where prisoners endured harsh conditions and punishments.

In Elie Wiesel's book "Night," Akiba Drumer loses his faith and will to live in the concentration camp. He eventually gives up and stops praying, becoming apathetic and losing hope, which ultimately leads to his death. His story serves as a powerful example of the devastating impact of dehumanization and loss of faith in such extreme circumstances.

Elie was separated from his mother and sisters during the selection process at Auschwitz concentration camp. They were sent to the gas chambers, while Elie and his father were deemed fit for labor. Elie's grandmother was separated from him upon arrival at the camp and sent to the gas chambers.

The SS officer stated that the only way to avoid the furnaces was through hard work. He believed that those who were capable of working could be of use to the camp and might be spared from immediate execution.

Moshe the Beadle was a poor foreign Jew that lived humbly and worked all time in the town's synagogue. People from Sighet often helped him by giving his some money or food. Even though he was a "master" in the art of incognito, meaning that he was very good being "invisible" to people, nobody ever felt encumbered by his presence. Nobody ever felt embarrassed by him (pg. 1). The relationship of Moshe and Elie began one day at dusk that Elie was praying. Moshe asked Elie: "Why do you weep when you pray?" (pg. 2). Elie was like, well, why do I breath, why do I pray? It was like natural for Elie to weep while praying. Elie wanted a master to help him with his studies of the cabbala, but his father disagrees with the idea (pg. 1). He and Moshe wanted answers of questions they had about God; they were very into religion matters.

Maybe because the ghettos were some sort of "trickery", because life at first was simple and in the ghettos it didn't seem real. Or the German soldiers were playing tricks on them, like for example the Germans were friendly at first and no one thought the cruelty was just a rumor, then all of a sudden they turned around and became ruthless.

One supporting detail in Night by Elie Wiesel that reflects the theme of survival instinct overcoming everything else is when Elie's father gives him his inheritance in the form of a knife and a spoon, showing that he prioritizes Elie's survival over his own. This act demonstrates the lengths to which individuals will go to ensure the survival of their loved ones in extreme circumstances. It captures the primal instinct to protect and preserve life, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

The two men tried to throw Wiesel's father from the carriage because he was lingering between life and death, and they wanted to make room for other passengers who were fully conscious and in need of space. They viewed him as a burden and saw his presence as an inconvenience.

"But I had no more tears. And, in the depths of my being, in the recesses of my weakened conscience, could I have searched it, I might perhaps have found something like-free at last!" Chapter 8, pg. 106

The prisoners traveled from Buna to Gleiwitz by marching in a forced death march. They were made to walk long distances in harsh conditions with minimal food, water, and rest. Many prisoners did not survive the journey due to exhaustion, sickness, or being shot by guards.

Elie feels a great void opening on Yom Kippur because his sense of faith has been shattered by the atrocities he witnessed in the concentration camps. The suffering and injustice he experiences lead him to question his beliefs and distance himself from his religion. This spiritual emptiness creates a feeling of despair and disconnection from his former self.

"Night" is a famous novel by Elie Wiesel. The narrator is a young Jewish man who leaves his house every night to sleep on the streets.

Eliezer was touched by the violin because it symbolized the loss of humanity and beauty in the midst of such profound suffering. The music spoke to a deeper part of him that connected to the essence of being human, whereas the sight of the dead bodies had become tragically normalized in the stark reality of the Holocaust.

This has been something that has been asked for many years and for now, has led nowhere.

In fact, the entire allegation of having even been sent to a concentration has never been verified by anyone besides Wiesel.

His name is not found on any of the concentration camp listings (of which the Nazi's were well known for), and even Wiesel's allegation that he is present in the famous Buchenwald liberation photo (a claim he first made in the late 80's) has been contested as being false by Miklos Gruner, who was in fact in the photo and been verified as a inmate of Buchenwald concentration camp.

Five motifs found in "Night" by Elie Wiesel are night and darkness, fire, silence, loss of faith, and inhumanity. These motifs recur throughout the novel and contribute to the overall theme of suffering and dehumanization experienced during the Holocaust.

Elie Wiesel experienced a traumatic first night at the concentration camp, Auschwitz, where he witnessed the separation of families, the brutality of the SS officers, and the dehumanizing conditions of the camp. The death that affects Elie the most is that of his father in the concentration camp. This loss leaves Elie feeling abandoned, alone, and devastated. It also forces him to grapple with the complexities of survivor's guilt and the weight of carrying on in a world where he has lost an anchor to his humanity.

In Chapter 3, Wiesel described how the selections were made. When they were all in a holding camp after the initial selections were made, they removed those who identified with certain trades. He never says specifically what happened after they left.

During war: He had some sort of infection in his foot, so he went to the surgeon at the camp who proceeded to cut the bottom of his foot to let out pus that had gathered, causing infection.

After war: He was hit by a taxi, then was in a wheelchair for about a year. Fortunately, he recovered and can now walk fine.

Elie's father helped him after he suffered one of Idek's bouts of madness in the camp. His father was a source of strength and support for Elie during their time in the concentration camp.

Eliezer was a 12 year old boy who loved Judaism, he completely believed in G-d. In the day he studied Talmud and at night he went to Temple. He believe that G-d was everything and everywhere. Eliezer had complete faith and belief to G-d. However when he got send to the concentration camp his faith decreases. He could not understand nor believe how G-d could let something so horrible happened. Eliezer started to have doubts that G-d existed, but he did not loos all his faith.
