Nomadic People

Nomads are any community of people who have no settled home. They wander from place to place seeking fresh sources of food for themselves or fresh pastures for their animals. Some nomadic groups move among settled people selling small items they have made, doing specialized mending, entertaining or begging. Nomads keep themselves separate from other people and usually speak their own language among themselves even though they also know the languages of the people around them.

Why did sedentary civilizations progressively dominate nomadic societies after the fifteenth century?

- The Black Death had a much greater impact on nomadic societies than sedentary ones.

- Sedentary states, especially those in Europe, became centralized and devoted more resources to military advancements used to fight off nomads. Some advancements include:

- Russians, the Ottoman Empire of the Mediterranean, and the Qing Dynasty of China moved into the heartlands of nomadic peoples and settled it with their growing peasant populations.

What dose nomad mean?

Nomadic people do not live in the same place year round. Instead of setting down roots, they tend to move from place to place whenever the situation warrants it. For example, many North American Indian tribes lived nomadic lifestyles, following the large game they hunted for food and clothing. If they failed to do so, the entire tribe could starve. In man's early history, everyone was nomadic, hunting and gathering to survive. Somewhere along the way, man figured out how to domesticate animals and grow crops. Only then were the first towns and cities formed, allowing some of us to abandon the nomadic lifestyle.
