Numbers

Numbers are our way to quantify, label, and organize the world around us in a logical manner. However, the systems used to obtain this goal differ geographically, historically, and by relative utility. All questions pertaining to numbers, including historic labeling systems, bases of numerical systems, constants, and the various ways they're grouped together, should be placed into this category.

Where are some places you can find irrational numbers?

Almost anywhere in geometry.

If a circle has an rational radius, its circumference and area will be irrational. Conversely, if the area is rational then the radius will be irrational.

The ratio of the diagonal of a square to its side is always sqrt(2) - an irrational. So if the sides are of rational length then the diagonal is irrational.

There are lots of other common objects where the fact that some of the measures are rational forces other measures to be irrational.

And circles and squares are all around you. Your glass / coffee mug is probably circular. Your plates, bowls etc.

The ratio of the length to width of standard paper (A4) is irrational.

Is 512 a composite number?

All the even numbers except 2 are composite numbers.

512 is an even number so, it is a composite number.

Is 111 a composite or prime number?

111 is not a prime number. It is a composite number. A prime number is any number whose only factors are 1 and itself. 111's factors are 1, 3, 37, and 111.

Well, it is prime if 111 is base 2 (binary) :P

How do you add with negative numbers?

Two negative numbers when added would produce another negative number.

For example:

-2 + -2= -4

-7 + -11= -18

-32321 + -8321812= -8289491

However, when you add a negative and positive number together, the number that is greater would determine which +/- sign the answer is and you would subtract it by the lesser number.

ex: -2 + 5 = 3 - notice how the number 5 is greater than -2? You would then subtract 2 from 5. To make things easier, you could also rewrite the equation.

ex#2: 5 -2 =3

Why is the perimeter of rectangle with an even width and lenght always an even number?

If both numbers are even, it will always be an even number. For example, 2 + 2 = 4.

Is zero real number?

Yes, zero is a real number. If you can plot it on a number line, it is real. It is also an integer, a whole number, a rational number, and could probably be designated as a few other types of numbers.

What is number which is prime?

All numbers that only have one and itself as factors are prime. Therefore, to tell if a number is prime simply find it's factors. If it has more than two factors than it is not a prime number, otherwise it is.

Is there such thing as a googol?

Yes - a googol is a number equal to 1 followed by 100 zeroes.

A similar number, the googolplex, is the number 1 followed by 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 (a googol) zeroes.
