Parakeets (Budgerigars)

Well, this is possible, if you want to have baby parakeets. If you do, keep thing in the same cage and install a nesting box. If you do not want to have babies, I sugest geeting a cage for each keet.

Any Parakeet can talk. You just have to train them. Talk around them alot like a parrot.

males generally are more apt to speak than females. not all parakeets talk if youre referring to the broader category of 'keets which include budgies, quakers, rosellas, ringnecks etc. hand tamed birds are more likely to talk than parent raised.

I would say that your parakeet is probably a girl. I did a lot of research on parakeets sexes and about training them. I am a parakeet expert and I know a lot about them. I am very certain that your parakeet is a female. A males cere is white with a tint of blue and pink.

The Association of Avian Veterinarians recommends the following diet for a parakeet: 50% cooked beans, whole wheat bread, cooked rice, pasta, and seed

45% fresh broccoli, carrots, yams, spinach, dandelion greens, other green/orange fruits and veggies

5% eggs, tuna packed in water, well cooked meat Parakeets are lactose-intolerant and cannot eat a lot of dairy product. Also, parakeets are HIGHLY allergic to chocolate and avocados and should never be given either. Junk food such as pretzles, potato chips, etc. aren't good for a parakeet either! You can feed a parakeet fresh fruit such as apples and cherries, but be careful about the seeds as those have toxins in them. Lettuce is fine, but it really has no nutrients in it. It's better to give them other, healthier greens. Parakeets do NOT overeat. If anything, people tend to give them too little food, thinking a seed cup is full when really it's just full of the hulls of the seeds the parakeet has already eaten. Be sure to refill your parakeet's food supply daily and to give him or her lots of fresh foods too. You'll find millet in many pet stores. This is very high in fat and is a treat for parakeets. It should only be fed to them occasionally. Parakeets in the wild certainly did not have millet year-round!

Keeping a parakeet and a finch together would be a very, very bad idea. The parakett is a hookbill with a very strong beak and could easily kill the little finch. Especaially in a small cage. Even if the finch wasn't killed, he would be under constant stress from having to live with a much stronger and aggressive bird. I would NOT attempt this.

I have been reading so much about parakeets lately and I read that it may be because of lack of exercise. So try to take your parakeets out of their cage once in a while. You can also try putting some new toys in their cage and introducing new toys once they get tierd of the old one.

You can make your parakeets happy by sticking a mirrior in their cage, you can give them a bath,you can play soft music for them, stick toys in for them like bells, talk to your keets. But make sure you put the cage in a room wheir your their most of your day or else your keets will get lonely. How would like to sit in a cornor ALL DAY LONG? think of it from your point of view.

They can do. However please bear in mind that different species of birds have different beaks.

Birds with short beaks are fed small grain-size foods which they can break open. Whilst birds with large beaks are fed larger food which they won't accidentally swallow and choke on.
Parakeets can eat finch food, but they should ideally have food produced specifically for parakeets due to their beak differences.

There are many different species of small parrot that are referred to as parakeets. The most commonly kept species is the budgerigar. Budgies can live to be in their late teens or early twenties if they are well cared for, but most pet budgies do not live that long due to bad breeder practices, poor nutrition and lack of proper veterinary care.

They shiver a lot. But seriously, birds don't loose all of their feathers when they molt. They lose some of the feathers on the torso, which are replaced with new feathers. The winter feathers trap warm air around the body better than the summer feathers.

If the leg is broken it will stand on one leg all day or lie on the bottom of its cage. Its best seeing a vet.

If you clip any bird's wings to the same length, they will still be able to fly awkwardly. When you clip a bird's wings for the purpose of stopping them flying, be sure to just clip the long flight feather at the end of one wing, not both wings. Be gentle, and be sure not to cut the bird itself.

The best species depends largely upon the lifestyle and personality of the human caretaker. Even though they are smaller than other kinds of parrots, most species are very noisy and messy. A budgerigar is a good species to start out with to see if living with parakeets is right for you. Check to see if a local bird rescue organization will let you foster a bird for a few months to see if it will work out. It's a bad idea to treat parakeets as disposable just because they are often cheaper and more easily available than large species. If well cared for, the lifetime commitment of parakeet ownership can be 15 years or more.

They are dogs, cats, and maybe even much bigger birds, So keep them away from dogs or cats! My bird died because my dog killed him, so be very careful and never leave them alone with another animal that is loose.

If you get 1 young and put him in a room you're in most of the time, then yes. If you put 2 together then they will socialice more with each other and will be more difficult to tame.

Budgerigars don't live in nests except when they are taking care of babies. They are cavity nesters, which means that they build nests in small spaces like holes in a hollow tree. In captivity, they live to build nests inside specially constructed nesting boxes.

Noramally, is pretty difficult to determine wether the bird will lay eggs or not. But keep in mind if it's one bird, it wont hatch. It takes a female and male. Females can lay eggs on their own but it wont be fertilized. You could probably tell if the bird goes inside a nesting box (if she has one) often.

This usually depends on the budgie or the store. If you buy a really fancy budgie, it may cost as much as a ferret or more. A regular budgie costs as much as $20-$29.

To communicate. All living animals communicate with each other, either through body language, sounds or both.

In the wild, parakeets make screeching sounds to communicate with other birds.

Birds are also a lot more socially complex than most people realise.

When feeding, wild birds will normally split into groups, while one group feeds, the other group will circle the food from the air or keep watch from trees, acting as sentries or guards. If a predator is spotted, the birds will call out to their feeding friends to get away.

Parakeets make noises to communicate either with other birds or their human family. They will also use sound to warn others of dangers.

well i have 2 keets myself and i myself isn't sure iwhich one it which. online it says that females have a tan or pink cere. and males have blue-purplish. but the owner i got them from says the pink is male and the blue is female i don't know which one is which yet. we will see if they mate

That is incorrect males have blue and females have dark pink and a little brown in them. So your parakeet is a female.

Parakeets don't do either of these things. Parrots (and probably all flying birds) defecate (make droppings) that are made up of faeces, urates and urine. The faeces are the most solid part of the droppings, the urine is the clear substance, and the urates are the cloudy or yellowish-green part of the droppings. Urates reflect the type of food the bird has been eatig. In one article I read, it said that if a parrot eats beets, the net day its droppings will show up strongly red.

For the rare parakeet it is quite simple - if the nostrals are blue - it is a boy.

if the nostrals are pink, red, or brownish - it's a girl.

The same as any other color of parakeet. Large millet seeds, canary seeds and small sunflower seeds. Also, vegies and cuttlebone for calcium. You can find the right mix for them in any pet store.
