Can parakeets eat worms?

yes. parakeets can eat worms. i am currently owning a parakeet and have for 70 years. i am an avian vet and have great looking birds. parakeet can eat worms but it is not part of their main diet, pellets and seeds and greens, such as lettuce, celery and fruits such as strawberries, and grapes, are much better for them, also parakeets don't like meat much so don't try feeding them worms to often.

What are facts about parakeets?

Well it depends on the breed of parakeet. I have 2 budgies and they are very adorable. They even mated. They can live to be about 15 if well cared for. They can fly if allowed and will be loving companions forever if you love them in return. They are generally ment to be kept in pairs, but if you want your own companion, you should keep them single. It isn't good though to keep a single parakeet if you are busy and he/she doesn't get enough attention. I tryed keeping them alone and they got very stressed out and we wound up putting them back together. For little birds I personally think that they eat A LOT. Their seed is kind of costly too if you get good, healthy brands. We have 2 budgies so buying seed is a big cost. Can parakeets eat honey?

Honey is actually very fattening. No, they should not eat it. Don't trust those "Nutritious" honey treats you see at walmart, too fattening. Probably hony is also to thick for them to eat alone also. Don't give them honey.

Are parakeets messy?

Yes. They will throw unliked food and empty seed shells on the floor, they whether they were on the couch or on the cage, they will have a mould when most of their feathers fall out, and they do have this very fine dust, that you can see in every single surface. So you will be needing that vacuum-cleaner and a mop ;)

How do you tell if blue parakeets are male or female?

I will first off say that if you want to tell the sex of your keet, for sure, take your parakeet to an avian vet and they'll be perfectly capable of telling you the sex, for a price of course. For free, you can do it at home, (or at the pet store) but often you have to wait until they're at least 4 months old. (You can't for sure tell their age on their own, because once they've hatched, they won't actually leave the nest until they're about the same size as their parents. Although, one way to determine if they're under a year old is by the bars on their heads, the closer the bars are to their eyes, the younger they are. Once the bars reach the bottom of their skull, (the nape of their neck) this method isn't useful anymore to determine age, because then they're at least a year old by this point.)

Now for the information you're actually looking for: All parakeets have something called a cere right above their beaks. They look like nostrils because there are two little holes. If the cere is brown, tan or variant of those colors, it means that your parakeet is a female. If the cere is blue, your parakeet is a male. If the cere is white, give it some more time to judge it's sex in this way (and by more time, I'm referring to months). Alternatively, if you're too impatient, you could always take it to a vet to have its sex determined there.

How long before my new parakeet will begin to sing?

parakeets don't sing, male canaries sing, parakeets kind of chirp and my mom's says like 10 words, its hard to understand him though. The previous owners had to spend a lot of time with him though to get him to talk, but they don't really sing.

If someone is allergic to cat are they allergic to parakeets?

Not quite; unless the person has multiple allergies ; which is possible. But when the people are allergic to cats most of the time is not the cat hair. What makes somebody to be allergic to cats is actually the saliva that the cat use to clean themselves and ends on his hair. Which at the end the cat is the one that carries it. Well saying this parakeets are birds and flap their winds a lot ; but they don't have the elements of the saliva's cat. Actually birds have a very clean beaks and tongue that some can die from human mouth contact (kiss). Perhaps the person can be allergic to the feathers. But like I said is very likely to be allergic to both...

What is the sickness of the parakeets?

Parakeets can have many sicknesses. Recently, my parakeet passed away due to a tumor and trauma when trying to produce an egg. They can also experience egg binding when an egg gets stuck coming out of the cloaca. If their cage is not cleaned, they can get mites that will make them loose their feathers. Parakeets can develop many illnesses if not treated correctly.

What do you do if your parakeet laid her eggs in her nesting box but she didn't put any bedding in it?

Leave your parakeet alone . . . she knows what she's doing. Parakeets do not place bedding into their nesting boxes, so your pet is fine.

How do you know when your parakeets are ready to breed?

I found the last answer a little disturbing.. Before you can breed budgies (parakeets) you will need to have researched and planned long before you put a hen and a cock together You cannot just let the pair "do all the work". Many health problems can occur, such as egg binding and calcium deficiency. You need to make sure the pair is healthy, not inbred and not related. The hen should be given extra calcium, as she will need it for the eggs. Before you breed you should have possible homes for the chicks ready. You will need a spacious breeding box. The nest-box will have to be accessible to you so you can keep a record of the egg and fledgling development. Only keep one pair in a single cage. When your setting up the breeding box don't overcrowd it. Your budgies wont have much time left for playing with toys. Please do not breed budgies on an all-seed diet. Introduce the already bonded pair to the box and try not to disturb them much. The pair may not breed. So do not be disappointed if they don't. If mating is successful the first egg will be laid around seven to ten days later and the next egg laid around the same time the next day. Eggs will hatch about 18 days after being laid. The hen should be sitting on the eggs while the cock feeds her and guards the nest. When the chicks are about 4 to 5 weeks old they will be curious and start exploring the surrounding outside the nest-box. When the first chick leaves the nest, the mother will still be sitting on the others. The cock will feed the other chick until he is fully independent and can eat on his own. I am highly against colony breeding, as many problems can occur with that "method". Budgies do not all get along peacefully. Fights for mates and nest spots get gory, and many end in deaths. Remember, this is a very, very, very brief guide and much further research is definitely required. I find that this is quite a good budgie breeding guide: http:/www.parrotfeather.com/budgie/budgiebreeding.php Please do not breed for money. There is no profit made in breeding budgies.

Do male parakeets chirp a lot?

Well, if parakeets are healthy and happy both male and female will chirp alot. That being said, male and female parakeets will often screech if they are not happy or if something like your music being played too loud or a cat is bothering them.

Why do female parakeets destroy other female parakeets eggs?

If you are asking this, you are probably colony breeding budgies in an aviary I highly advise you stop breeding and research budgies for a few years and then you may start planning. Hens will destroy other pairs eggs for a few different reasons. The hen may want the nesting box for herself to use, so she cleans it out. She may want to breed with the cock so she destroys the pairs eggs. She may just be jealous. Never, ever, ever keep more than one breeding pair in a single breeding box or aviary. I also do not recommend the use of aviaries for breeding. Keeping an uneven amount of hens and cocks in a breeding environment will result in bloody fights.
