Peacocks and Peahens

Peacocks have similar 'claws' to roosters. They have small talons, used for scratching at the ground.

The eggs of peahens are an off white/light beige color. They are the approximate size of a goose egg. The peacock egg is a sort of cream color. Many people do paint them though.

Swans are North Americas largest waterfowl. The largest swan in the world is the trumpeter swan of North America. It measures as long as 72 in (1.8 m) and has a wingspan as large as 8.2 ft (2.5m) they can weigh up to 35 lbs. The smallest swan is the Coscoroba swan of South America.

Domestic turkeys can attain weights as large as 86 lbs. however the wild turkey is somewhat smaller as it must forage for food and fly to escape predators. The wild turkey is smaller than the swan since average weights of wild turkeys range from 12 to 18 lbs.

A peacock is a type of bird with bright colored feathers which the males display when courting. The sound they make is a very loud, high pitched sound similar to a baby crying.

1. During the breeding season, peacocks choose special places to perform their courtship dance and they tend to return to the same location year after year. Other males may be doing the same thing close by and peahens will window-shop-the peacock with the best display wins.
2. When a peahen comes close enough, the peacock turns his back and brings his train erect, displaying the underlying tail feathers and his dark wings, which he flutters rapidly, From this angle, the brilliant colours of the display feathers can't be seen-the bird is predominantly grey and brown. The peacock steps from side to side and sometimes moves forward or backward a few steps.
3. When the peahen comes closer still, the peacock backs up towards her, and when she avoids him, he turns, revealing all his colour and holding his wings still. He then drops the great fan down on top of the female. It quivers, making a rustling sound.
4. The peahen may mate with the peacock, or she may simply walk away or stand still, whereupon the male starts over, turning his back again and resuming the rapid fluttering of his wings. The peacock can hold his fan of display feathers up for a very long time.
5. For reasons that are not well understood, peahens tend to mate with peacocks with the most eye-spots.

A peacock, Pavo Cristatus, has multicolored feathers so he can attract and mate with as many peahens as possible.

The bright plumage draws attention to the male; showing off his vibrant feathers is a sign of health. His unnaturally large and disproportionate tail, which would otherwise hinder an animal's survival, is proof of his successful survivability; this is known as Handicap Theory. The loud peafowl call that echoes through the woods is a symbol of his dominance and vigor. His heavy tail-waiving and dancing is a sign of strength.

The entire display has the peahens swooning, or scientifically speaking 'sexually selecting' the male, which in turn ensures the production of future offspring.

The female peacock/peafowl, known as a peahen, will lay random "decoy eggs" around at first, then finds somewhere she can hide the eggs she wants to brood, such as leaves or even just dirt. It's not even really a nest, just a depression scraped in the ground and lined with grass. The pea hen lays eggs once every two days until she has about eight eggs or so. She broods for 28 days, leaving the nest only once per day, and then you get a whole bunch of little peachicks!

Peacocks ususally dont mate until there third year.During the mating season peacocks(male) tend to make strange noises. To mate, the peacock(male) puts on sort of show for the peahen(female). If the peahen takes intrest she will mate with him. Peahens will lay about 2-6 eggs at a time. The eggs will hatch after 28 days of being layed and in a shell. the Peahen lays them in the open forest and waits for them to hatch by keeping them warm and sitting on them.

hi i m zain dear questionier peafowls of peacocks adults are designed by nature to fly and sit on perch or tree as soon as sun goes down then at dawn when light shows up they become active! i keep my peacocks in room of about 22 feet width and 17 in hieght with windows covered with steel strips i usually turn on the light at night so that they manage to get to perch and sit settle then i turn it off! if kept in doors peafowls should atleast have 4 hours of sun light access and they should be given darkness to sleep for 7 hours at minimum.if u want ur peacocks to be healthy becoz we all know pea fowl when get stressd out they are more prone to sickness and diseases. regards zainii :)

Peafowl are colorful birds found throughout Central Asia and some areas of Africa. The term "peacock" refers to male peafowl birds, while "peahens" are female peafowl. Peacocks are known for their colorful display of tail feathers; they create a fan shape with their tail feathers to impress peahens. Peafowl are ground-dwellers and forage for food underneath trees in the early evening.

Male peacocks are noted for their predominant bright, iridescent blue and lightish darkish green feathers. They also have some bronze coloring of the feathers that also seems iridescent when in some lighting conditions. Female peahens are predominantly brown, grey, white and bronze with speckles and with iridescent blue/green feathers on their necks.

Well actually other than in mating season peacocks are solitary birds. If in the wild two peacocks meet they begin fighting immediately. The winner continues on his way while the loser more than likely dies.
