Where did the phrase sweat like a pig come from?

The phrase "sweating like a pig" actually has nothing to do with the animal that you might find on a farm. Instead, it refers to iron "sows" and "piglets" made when smelting pig iron. In traditional iron smelting, liquid iron is poured into a mold shaped like one long line with many smaller lines branching off of it at right angles. This looks similar to piglets feeding from their mother, so these pieces became known as pigs. After the pigs are poured into the sand, they cool, causing the surrounding air to reach its dew point and turn into moisture on the pigs, like they are sweating. When the pig is sweating, it's cool enough to be moved.

What are pigs diet?

Guinea pig's should be fed twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the evening. There morning meal should inclued:

  • Guinea pig cerial mix (NOT RABBIT) which is available in pet stores. This is essentail as guinea pigs cannot produce their own vitimain C. (which this food provides).

  • Hay. This is also essential as guinea pigs find it very hard to digest whithout hay.

(In late Spring, Summer and early Autumn, guinea pigs should be

allowed outside in exercise runs if the weather is good. Water, shelter

and shade should be provided at all times.)

Their evening meal should inclued:

  • More cerial mix.
  • Another water change.
  • Vegetables, two different kinds. Such as: Carrots, Apples, Pears, Celery, Cucumber, Tomatoes, Parsley, Cauliflower, Parnsips, Beans, Sweed, Cabbage (but only in small amounts. NEVER FEED lettuce or patatoes.
  • Guinea pigs also love dandelions. Always make sure you know what your picking though! Applebranches are great for wearing guinea pigs teeth down.

Extras:

  • Salt and mineral licks are great for guinea pigs.
  • You can also get a variety of healthy treats which they love.

And finally:

  • Handle your guinea pigs daily.
  • Clean them out AT LEAST every seven days.
  • Pay attention to their claws and when they need trimming. If you cannot manage this task take them to a vet. NEVER USE HUMAN NAIL SCISSORS FOR THIS JOB!

Is it good for a guniea pig to eat 2 full leafs of lettuce a day?

Leaf lettuce does not have a lot of food value, is mostly water. Make sure to feed your guinea pig dark colored leaf lettuce with other types of greens & fruits & veggies, such as spinach, carrots & carrot tops, alfalfa hay, celery tops, pieces of apples, oranges, broccoli. The guinea pig also needs to be supplemented with vitamin C added to their diet, use the liquid or grind up tablets of Vit C into their food. Most animals naturally manufacture their own Vitamin C with the exception of humans, Guinea Pigs & Rhesus Monkey. It is very important that you add Vitamin C to your Guinea Pig's diet. The key is to feed your guinea pig various types of greens, fruits & vegetables.

How do you hold a pig receiving an injection?

A piglet is relatively easy, as you can cradle the piglet in your arms then inject into the semitendinosus muscle. An adult pig is much more challenging - you need to contain the pig into an area you can get close enough to inject fast enough before the pig gets away. Most commercial hog farms have a chute that the pig can stand in but not turn sideways with drop-down doors that keep the pig from walking forwards or backwards.

Do all pigs like to get dirty?

Pigs do not like to get dirty, the reason why they roll in the mud is because pigs are not made with sweat glands. During summer or hot weather, they are unable to sweat to keep themselves cool, therefore they will roll in the mud. The mud then acts as a deflector from the sun, keeping the pig cool.

When pigs are kept in pens they will reserve one corner of the pen for feces, this corner is far from the place that they eat and sleep.
