Can it take a week for poison ivy to show up?

Poison ivy reactions can begin to appear within just a few hours after contact with the plant, depending on the sensitivity of the individual. Contact with affected animals, clothing or from burning plants may cause similar reactions. It may be helpful to cleanse the skin immediately after being in the woods, before blisters appear. The oily urushiol from these plants causes contact dermatitis, and several products are available on the market to be used after suspected exposure. Soap and water alone may be insufficient to remove this substance from the skin, so many products also contain a base of petroleum distillates to emulsify the oil from the skin surface. A less expensive alternative may be made at home by combining equal parts of liquid detergent with a product like GooGone or bug/tar remover, and using this with warm water in a shower. This is followed by a regular shower with soap alone to remove the residues of the petroleum distillates and urushiol. In children under 2 years old, only soap and warm water should be used. Benadryl (diphendydramine) creams or lotions applied afterwards will help reduce the itching after exposure.

Summer tends to be the season that people identify as the 'worst' for poison ivy [Toxicodendron radicans] allergic reactions. Indeed, a fence against which poison ivy brushed may bring on an allergic reaction as much as 1-1/2 years later.

Is it safe to drink poison ivy as a tea?

No, but it can give you a nasty case of internal poison ivy. Don't do it!

The person who wrote the answer above has no idea what they are talking about! The correct answer IS No, you wont become immune to it BUT you also wont develop any irritation internally!! I have been drinking poison ivy as a child and still am very fond of the tea. Also the irritation caused by poison ivy is not contagious, the irritation only occurs when the person comes into direct contact with the plant. As a child i picked poison ivy with my mother for tea and often "burned" myself. An easy and quick way to relieve irritation is to not disturb the effected area. If you don't touch it the irritation will pass in a few minutes. If irritation persists simply dab some tea tree oil over the effected area.

How do you prone ivy geraniums?

Cut them back to about eight inches, stop watering them and store them in a cool, dry place like the cellar. You can also keep ivy geraniums (actually they are pelargoniums) in a sunny window throughout the winter. Once again, cut them back, but in this case just reduce watering. Let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings.
