How do you kill the poison ivy plant?
Best way it to pull it up roots and all. If you have axis to heavy equipment you can dig up roots then hook cable or chain to the roots and pull out large clumps at a time. I am going to try a crossbow herbicede with a round up combo to see if it will kill it. So far nothing has killed it other then pulling up the roots.
Are there poison ivy treatments that don't involve creams or steroids?
Waiting it out would be the only option. There are many expensive over the counter soaps and one-time creams. These are often very effective but only within an hour or two of contact. At this point most people do not even know they have been exposed. Poison Ivy is an allergic reaction or body has to the oils in the leaves of the plant, therefore the only way to relieve symptoms would be topical or oral steroids. For minor cases, Benadryl, a first generation anti-histamine may be an appropriate option. However, due to its heavily sedating nature, benadryl may be a bad choice.
How do you know if a plant in your garden is poison sumac?
1. Look for poison sumac in very moist or flooded soils such as marshes or wooded swamps. If the surrounding area is relatively dry, you can be sure that the plant you are examining is not poison sumac.
2. Measure the plant. Fully mature, its height will range between 6 and 20 feet (2 - 6 m
3. Look for branches all along the trunk. Poison sumac can be considered either a woody shrub or a small tree. It produces branches at all heights along its trunk, resulting in an overall form that is full and rounded
4. Look for a pinnate leaf structure. This means that each stem contains 2 parallel rows of leaves on either side with a single leaf at the end. These pinnate structures will contain between 7 and 13 leaves
5. Look at the oval or oblong shape of the leaves, tapering to a fine point at the tip. The leaf edges will have a very subtle undulation. They should also have an upward orientation, with the axis angled towards the tip of the stem.
6. Measure the length of the leaves. Leaves typically range between 2 and 4 inches (5 - 10 cm) in length.
7. Look for bright green or bright red leaves. Poison sumac leaves are bright green throughout the warmer months, turning to a bright red in the fall before falling away in the winter.
8. Look for a smooth, matte appearance and texture on the leaves. The leaves are usually hairless on both sides, but sometimes have a fuzzy layer of very small hairs on the underside.
9. Observe the stems and branches of the plant. The stems of the poison sumac are hairless and smooth. They typically have a dark brown color, flecked with even darker spots.
10. Look for white or greenish-white berries hanging in clusters. The poison sumac produces berries that are very similar to those produced by poison ivy or poison oak. The berries are quite small. They appear in spring and typically last through the beginning of winter, when they will dry up and fall away.
11. Look for small, greenish-yellow flowers. Poison sumac flowers are, like the fruit, very similar to those of poison ivy and poison oak.

Should you wash the poison ivy blisters with warm water?
You do need to keep the area of the rash clean, especially if the blisters have opened, are oozing, or you have scratched and opened the skin. Gentle cleansing with soap and water is best. If gently washing under the faucet is uncomfortable then dab with a damp cloth and mild soap, then rinse well. Baby shampoo (only a few of drops with water) can be a good choice for a mild cleanser. Cool water will feel better than warm and for this purpose would be adequate to clean the area, rinse well with running cool water. There are cleansers made specifically to remove the poison ivy oils, that contain the irritant, from your skin. If used quickly after an exposure or suspected exposure, these special poison ivy cleansers do work well and can prevent the rash.
As far as remedies for the condition once you have a rash, the following treatment was taught to me by a very old farmer when I was a child and it has proven itself many many times for me and for others whom I've told ever since: Find fresh rhubarb and break open one of the stalks, rub the thick sap that oozes from the broken stem (much like the juice from an aloe plant used for burns) on the rash. It instantly will stop the itch and dries the rash up faster than any commercial products I've ever used. Friends have told me that when they could not find fresh rhubarb they used the frozen rhubarb and had the same results, although I can not confirm that personally.

Is poison ivy a acid nautral or alkaid?
Poison ivy is not classified as an acid, natural, or alkaloid; rather, it contains an oily resin called urushiol. Green. It is brown when dead. The thing that distingunguishes it as poison ivy is the number of leaves, not the color. As the saying goes, " Leaves of three, leave it be." Poison ivy has a chemical(urishol) that gives most ppl a rash when they touch it.
What in poison ivy makes people allergic to it?
Poison ivy (and its cousins poison oak and poison sumac) contains an oily substance called urushiol. About 1/3 of people are allergic to urushiol. The leaves and branches of the poison ivy plant contain urushiol, and breaking the plant releases additional urushiol to the surface. Burning the poison ivy plant will release the urushiol into the air, possibly causing serious inflammation of the throat and lungs. Also, unlike some allergens, repeated exposure to urushiol can increase a person's sensitivity.
If you think you may have touched a poison ivy plant, as soon as possible you should wash the affected area with soap and cold water. Hot water will disperse the urushiol over a larger area, possibly making it much worse. You can buy specially formulated soaps like Tecnu that will bind to the urushiol, allowing it to be washed off harmlessly.
Also, note that dogs and cats and other animals will happily play in poison ivy without being affected, but they will get the urushiol on their fur. If you then touch the animal, you get urushiol on your hands, which you can then spread to other parts of your body or to other people.
