Can a concrete pool pop?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you mean can a concrete pool pop up out of the ground then the answer is Yes it can. All you need is an empty or partially empty concrete pool and a lot of ground water around it once the ground water around the outside of the pool builds up enough the pool will start to float. I have seen it happen several times over the years. To avoid this happening most pools have a hydrostatic valve fitted in the bottom of the pool to allow ground water into the pool when there is a build up of water pressure outside the pool it flows into the pool to stop it from floating.

How fast will the water evaporate in an above ground pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends on whether the pool is considered "enclosed" inside a pool house or not. The assumption in such case is that the pool house prevents "outside" air circulation which enables the humidity inside that "house" to be maintained at a high level which minimizes evaporation. It goes without saying then that if you keep the doors to your pool house open then you loose much of the evaporative benefit of having the pool enclosed. In any case, high ambient outside air temperature will increase the pool evaporation rate but an enclosure should slow it down. Pool covers can also decrease evaporation rate. More input from FAQ Farmers: * Go to Arizona edu. There you will see a contour map of the U.S. providing annual evaporation rates in inches of loss per year. Find the rate for your area. Divide the rate by 365 to get the daily rate in inches of loss per day. * If you are concerned of a leak place a bucket of water on the steps of the pool and fill it so that the level equals the pool(u might have to weigh the bucket down with a rock or something) check the level the next day to see if they both evaporated the same.

Is 2 inch difference of level ground okay for ground swimming pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I assume your question is "How to level the ground for the installation of swimming pools" The answer is for a yard size pool you may have to rent a small grader such as a "bobcat" combination front end loader with a blade and grading attachment. These are widely available in North America and the Caribbean.

Does a swimming pool have gravity?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Every thing exists under the same laws of Gravity. many things seem lighter in a swimming pool because they are relatively lighter in a heavy medium like water rather the light medium like air. Nearly every thing falls to the ground in air. however there are a lot of things that float or go up in water because they are lighter then water. this rule applies to every thing even things that sink.

Can you change from overlap to beaded liner?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is no more difficulty involved in changing your overlap liner to a beaded liner, then there is in just replacing your overlap liner. The initial requirement of taking off the top rails or top seats, to take your old liner out is still needed. the difference would be, when placing your new beaded liner in your pool, depends on whitch bead you have. There are 2 kinds of beaded liners, a "U" bead that requires you have a track that rims the top of your poll wall so it can be hooked into that track and a "J" bead that simply hangs on the top of your pool wall. There is a liner that is called a uni-bead that has both of these beads on the one liner and you can choose which one to be used. The process of changing out from a overlap to a beaded is no more work then changing out the overlap to a new overlap. One "pro" for the "U" bead liner is that there is a chance, that when you have to change that liner out in the future you might not have to take the top rails off. If there is enough space for your fingers to get in where the bead track is then you can snap it into the track with less work of removing the top part of the pool. The beaded liners also do not require any coping along the top of the liner.

Do you have to remove all the grass when putting up a above ground pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, but if you don't the grass will mold and sour and create a huge mess when you remove the pool for the winter season. Digging up the grass using a square shovel is the best idea. Put down a tarp or use sand, which you compact using water, until the sand it hard and doesn't mold to your foot anymore.

Digging up the grass, leveling out the ground afterwards and using a tarp is the easiest way to do this.

What is so special about black-bottom pools?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Colored surfaces are basically an aesthetic choice by the owner of the pool. It is a myth that the darker the surface the warmer the pool. To illustrate, put a black plate and a white plate in the bottom of the pool. Remove them a few hours later and see if there is any temperature difference between them. There won't be. I've tried this. Water absorbs all the heat from the sun in the top 12 inches and never has a chance to reach the bottom. I have also monitored the temp. in white and black bottom pools that were next door to each other and had virtually identical conditions....no difference. Actually I have done this 3 times in the last 34 years to prove this point. Won a $500 bet on one them:-) Evaporative cooling is the single most important factor in pool temps. Every 7 mph of wind velocity doubles the evaporation rate.

How do you know if ground water is coming in under pool liner?

One way would be to install drain tile in the yard around the pool deck to carry excess ground water away from the pool.

Is it easy to convert from a pool liner to inground concrete?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

IT IS NOT ONLY NOT EASY IT IS NOT POSSIBLE.CONCRETE POOLS ARE A CONCRETE "TANK" AND GUNITE OR SOME SIMILAR MATERIAL USED AS A SUFACE COATING . THE TANK IS MADE FIRST OF STEEL REBARS THEN THE CONCRETE IS SHOT IN PLACE GIVING YOU A CONCRETE SHELL .TO DO THIS TO A VINYL POOL THE ONLY PART YOU COULD USE WOULD BE THE HOLE IN THE GRUOND THAT YOUR VINYL POOL IS SITTING IN.IF SOMEONE TELLS YOU THEY CAN DO IT ...CLOSE YOUR CHECKBOOK AND WALK AWAY --THATS FROM SOMEONE WITH OVER 20 YRS IN THE BUSINESS.

IS IT EASY TO BUILD A GUNITE POOL OUT OF A LINER POOL SHELL?

A licensed swimming pool professional builder can build a new pool inside of your old shell, of course your new pool will be around 1-1.5 feet smaller. Count on demo costs with the old pool shell also. You have options with any kind of remodel job, another reason for hiring a professional with a license.

So is it easy - yes, yes, But only if your the licensed swimming pool professional or you just hired one. getapool.com take care good swimming

Easy? No way. As a professional pool builder that has shot gunite pool shells inside existing vinyl liner pools, I can tell you that the job is actually harder than building a pool from scratch. If your just going to shoot inside the existing hole the pool will end up being smaller as stated above and shallower as well to accommodate for the 6 inches of gunite that will be added. All of the existing returns have to be cut back and extended to allow for this, the main drain should be dug up and replaced with a gunite drain, and the skimmer should be cut out and replaced with a gunite skimmer. the deck should be cut back, but alternately coping can be installed to line back up with the existing deck. The deck will have to be cut out around the vinyl skimmer to make way for the gunite skimmer replacement, I have seen people not replace the skimmer but this leaves a good place for a future leak, I wouldn't recommend it. The plastic steps will have to be removed as well. You may want the bottom dug out so it can be made deeper and larger as the hopper area on most vinyl pools are small and tapered. It's a job to say the least, but it is possible. Cost wise it will probably run more than a gunite pool from scratch. The only things you are using over is the deck, the hole, and the plumbing. For more information go to howtobuildaningroundpool.com

If you are tired of replacing your vinyl liners, why not check out fiberglass as an option. A new fiberglass surface can be applied to your pool, and you will get a much longer life out of it. You can read more at: http://www.advancedpoolcoatings.com

Should you drain your pool when it is about to overflow?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You should never completely drain an above ground pool. The chemicals in the vinyl liner that allow it to stretch when originally installed do not last. If you drain the water, the liner will shrink and when you refill the pool there is a good chance that instead of stretching back the liner will rip instead. NEVER drain your pool.

How long can an in-ground pool remain completely drained?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The pool should stay empty for as short a time as possible. When the pool is empty the walls are subject to relativley extreme changes in temperature, compared with the stable temperatures of water. Shrinking and expanding (with temperature changes) of the pool wall surface will result in cracking. You then face the joys and expense of repairing the cracks. The bottom line is: Empty the pool only when you need to, do whatever you intended to do while the pool is empty - and start refilling it immediately.

Just wanted to add that a pool left empty can "float"..that is to say it pops out of the ground, rising above ground level several inches or more. The ground surrounding the pool, especially if it is wet, is heavier than the pool surface, and puts pressure on the pool walls, which could cause tehm to crack, or "float" the pool. Having said that, I had my pool empty for a long time before I had it re-plastered and nothing happened to it. :)

How can you tell if you have a leak in pool liner?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I have a vinyl liner pool and I was wathcing the bottom being prepared. 1) The bottom needs to be very smooth my builder used a hand trowel to do this. My liner is 22 mil thick and I do feel little bumps her and there. If it is not trowled smooth it will be very rough on your feet. 2) The corners where the wall and bottom meet need to be rounded so that dirt won't settle in. 3)A cement product called vermiculite ( Im not sure of the spelling) should be used. This has an absortion material mixed with it that helps pull moisture away from the vinyl so that it doesn't get mildew underneath.I believe this is about 2 to 4 inches thick.

If you are having a vinyl liner installed in the pool, then your pool is not being constructed properly.

Asking "how do i know if a vinyl liner pool is being constructed properly" is like asking "how do i know if the straw house being built on sand is being constructed properly."

A properly constructed pool needs no liner of any kind.

Todd you need to study about the types of pools that are installed that is installed!!!! Putting in a vinyl lined pool has nothing to do with the pool being constructed properly, it is the type of pool by choice, obviosly you didn't read the answer from Tim. There are FIBERGLASS, GUNITE and VINYL lined pools, that is if you want to consider FIBERGLASS and GUNITE as a liner . I have a vinyl pool which incorporates steel walls with the bottom being vermiculite. Of course if you want a mud hole then you wouldn't put in a liner.

Where can you rent an above ground pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A 5ft pool would be VERY expensive. By that I mean in the thousands of dollars...

Walmart.com does have a 4.5ft pool for just under $700.00.

That is going to be the most reasonable choice.

Is there a way to paint or stain a pebble coat pool finish in order to regain or change its color?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes there are paints available for pools. I have never heard of a stain for pools though. Pebble surface pools don't "loose" their color. What you may be experiencing is a dull calcium or mineral deposit. Deposits can sometimes be cleaned with an acid wash. If it is very bad it can be blasted off by a tile cleaner.

How do you install an above ground pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Almost all above ground pools include a video showing the full installation.

If you wanted to view the video BEFORE you purchase the pool (for exampole, to make sure that the installation process is within your skill level), I would suggest one of the following:

1. Contact the manufacturer of the pool that you are interested in. They will probably send you a video for the pool of your choice for a nominal fee (or maybe even free).

2. Contact your local pool dealer or pool supply store. They might have a video that they are willing to lend to you.

3. Some manufacturers have the installation instructions on their websites. It may not be a video but it will explain each installation step clearly.

Hope this helps ...

How do you repair a leaking return pipe?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Where ever it is leaking, there is some form of gasket. The connection may just need to be tightened or the gasket replaced. The gaskets are different depending on where they are.

Improved answer. -If it's an old grey plastic or steel pipe, it's almost impossible to seal leaks at either end. Take it off and go to Home Depot and buy a new SS braided rubber hose for less than $5. - These have excellent gaskets at each end. -Sometimes it's just not worth it to fool around with old junk !
