There are about 3 1/2 to 4 cups of powdered sugar in a pound. But this depends on the sugar's humidity, moisture, and density. Sifting adds air and increases volume, therefore sifted powdered sugar would be less dense than unsifted.

4 cups sifted powdered sugar = 1 pound

Is icing sugar the same as confectioners' sugar?

Icing sugar, powdered sugar and confectioner's sugar are all the same thing - in England, the name is always Icing Sugar. In America it is known as Confectioners sugar. In Britain, it is used mixed with water to make a hard coating on a layer of marzipan for traditional English Christmas cake. If it is desired to make the icing slightly softer, glycerine is added to the sugar and water mixture

You can actually make it in small amounts if you need some in a hurry, by putting regular sugar in a blender and whirling away until the sugar is very fine.

How many cups of powdered sugar are in a regular size box?

There are approximately 3 3/4 cups of powdered sugar to 1lb WEIGHT in dry measure of powdered sugar....+/-, depending on density of the sugar.

Powdered sugar is packaged by weight, not volume. Any recipe is calling for a volume, so the volume it takes to equal a given weight of the dry substance being measured is dependent on the density of the substance.

Is powdered sugar gluten free?

Powdered sugar is usually gluten-free, but it is important to always check the label. Some brands even label the package as gluten-free. Most commercial powdered sugars are blended with corn starch to keep them fluffy. Occasionally, some manufacturers have been known to use wheat products instead of corn starch, so ALWAYS check the label every time you buy! You can always make your own powdered sugar just by putting sugar in your blender or food processor until it's fluffy! Then you'll KNOW what's in it!

How many cups of powdered sugar in a pound?

This is very strange. I checked the back of a box of C & H powdered sugar and it said there were 15 "servings" per box, each a quarter of a pound, so according to that box, 3 3/4 cups per pound. I double checked the store brand, it also had 15 "servings" per box, but said each serving was 0.125 of a cup, or an eighth of a cup, which would mean just under 2 cups per pound. I checked the 2 lb. bag of store brand powdered sugar, and it said there were 30 units of .25 cups, which would mean 7.5 cups per bag, and 3 3/4 cups per pound.

I have to assume there is an error on the back of the pound box of the store brand, and the correct answer is in fact approx. 3 3/4 cups per pound.

Why shouldn't you mix melted chocolate with powdered sugar for frosting?

it would be to sweet, and in which some people could not scarf it down.

Additional information:

Melted chocolate returns to solid form when cooled. So if melted chocolate were mixed with powdered sugar, when cool it would be very hard, not be the right consistency for frosting.
