In the 7th book, Heartless, it is suggested that Billy Ford killed Ali. In the 8th book of the series, Wanted, the truth is revealed (in somewhat retroactive continuity).

Ali secretly had a twin sister, Courtney, who the girls knew as "Ali" until she was killed, actually by her sister the real Ali. Courtney was pretending to be Ali while Ali was in a mental hospital overseas. When Ali came back, she was so mad at Courtney for pretending to be her that she pushed Courtney into a hole, killing her. Aria, Emily, Spencer and Hanna didn't know about Ali's twin, so they were led to believe that the real Ali died.

Mona was originally "A" because she was jealous that Hanna dumped her for Aria, Emily, and Spencer. Mona was "A" for awhile until she was killed at Homecoming. After Mona died, Ali took on the "A" persona.
It wasnt Ali that died. It was Courtney.
Well, in the books, Ali had a twin sister Courtney who switched places with Ali, then Courtney became friends with the 4 girls. Ali was mad at Courtney because of the switch so ali killed Courtney that night. and the REAL Ali was alive and courteny was killed.
First of all Ali was really Chelsea, Allisons Twin sister. They switched places because Chelsea wanted a normal life ( was in a crazy house). So to make the long story short, Ali Killed "Ali"

Book Alison killed Alison. Alison had a identical twin sister, Courtney, who was in a mental facility as she was very jealous of her twin and attempted to drown her. Nobody outside of the family knew about Courtney after they moved to Rosewood. Courtney wanted Alison's life and when visiting her family during the weekends (where she was forced to stay inside). However, one weekend she left her house during the Time Capsule competition and she met Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna when they all meet in her backyard to steal her Time Capsule Flag. Courtney pretended to be Alison and eventually made friends with the four girls - who believed her to be Alison. As they were not Alison's current friends they didn't notice any different. Courtney also managed to convince her parents that she was Alison which meant the real Alison was sent to the mental facility in place of Courtney. The real Alison wasn't happy and killed her twin sister, Courtney.

TV Series However, in the TV series, Ian admitted to killing Alison because she had his videos from when he stalked the girls and Jenna. However it is later revealed that he was murdered and it was made to look like a suicide with a fake note claiming he killed Alison. It had not been revealed who really killed her.
Spencer,Hanna,Emily and Aria suspect it is Ian.

Nobody killed Alison but her twin sister , Courtney, was killed by Alison . Courtney was pretending to be Alison and got her sister ( the normal one ) sent to rehab. So that's why Alison killed her secret twin sister.

That's what a medium told Aria, this is actually true.

Ali had a twin sister, Courtney. She pretended to be Alison, so Ali had to go to a mental hospital. After she could visit home, she killed Courtney, who was still pretending to be Alison.

Pretty Little Liars is a popular book series about a group of four girls who lose their best friend Allison. In the books, the girls receive text messages from a girl named "A." But just who is A? But, in the tv show it's been changed a lot. Now Mona is being harassed by A meaning she can't be A. So obviously the producers changed it.

There are TWO A's in Pretty Little Liars.

• The first A is Mona V, who discovered all the secrets about the four girls when Mya moved into Ali's old house, and Ali's diary was with the things that Mya moved out of Alison's old room.
• Mona takes this diary and gets her revenge from when the four girls were mean to her and called her a loser. Mona gets killed when she was trying to push Spencer off a cliff. Spencer moved away, and Mona fell down the cliff instead, therefore killing A number 1.
• The second A is really Alison DiLaurentis-The Alison that the girls were friends with was really her identical twin sister, Courtney. Courtney was mentally ill, so they sent her to a mental institution. However, Courtney escaped from the mental institute and sent the real Ali in her place.
• Courtney got rid of all of Alison's old friends so they would not figure out that she was not Ali, and got 4 new friends, Spencer, Hanna, Aria, and Emily. The real Ali escaped from the mental institution and killed Courtney, then buried her in the backyard.
• Of course, when they found Courtney's body, they thought it was Alison, because they are identical twins. Alison then became the second A because she found the diary that Courtney was keeping about the 4 girls and all of their secrets.

The quote is from George Vailllant, who directs the Harvard Longitudinal Study of Aging. It is from one or both of two book he wrote: Adaptation to Life. 1977. Boston: Little Brown, and/or Age Well: Surprising Guideposts to a Happier Life from the Landmark Harvard Study of Adult Development, published in the early 2000's.

Dr. Vaillant was referring to the finding that when men were interviewed every 10 years they gave different versions of their life history. The distortions are unintentional, and appear to reflect people's natural tendency to reinvent the past according to current unconscious psychological needs.

The Atlantic has a feature story, "What makes us happy?", about the Harvard Study of Adult Development -- a 72-year-old study of originally-normal Harvard undergraduates.

But as Vaillant points out, longitudinal studies, like wines, improve with age. And as the Grant Study men entered middle age-they spent their 40s in the 1960s-many achieved dramatic success. Four members of the sample ran for the U.S. Senate. One served in a presidential Cabinet, and one was president. There was a best-selling novelist (not, Vaillant has revealed, Norman Mailer, Harvard class of '43). But hidden amid the shimmering successes were darker hues. As early as 1948, 20 members of the group displayed severe psychiatric difficulties. By age 50, almost a third of the men had at one time or another met Vaillant's criteria for mental illness. Underneath the tweed jackets of these Harvard elites beat troubled hearts. Arlie Bock didn't get it. "They were normal when I picked them," he told Vaillant in the 1960s. "It must have been the psychiatrists who screwed them up."

It's an odd story -- a longitudinal survey based on Freudian principles. JFK was one of the study's subjects. And probably the most enduring lesson, "Maturation makes liars of us all."

Alison had a twin sister Courtney and Courtney was the one who died and Alison is in rehab and Courtney died by a round object like a hockey stick what Toby found in spencers back yard while building a fence for there neighbor and Courtney was hit from behind by surprise and the blow dented her skull but did not kill her she died from being buried alive! Alison is still alive but the Aria, Hannah, Spencer, and Emily thinks she is dead:)
She didnt die. Her twin sister did, Courtney. Alli pushed her down a hole when she got mad at her. The body they found was Courtney's. Courtney was Alli at the time of the Jenna Thing and Alli was Courtney at the time.

• The Pretty Little Liars never knew that Ali actually had a twin named Courtney, who was insane. One day, Courtney managed to switch places with Ali. The Ali that all the girls knew was really Courtney! When the real Ali finally came back, she killed Courtney.

• Ali never died. She has a twin sister named Courtney, who is sick in the head, who pretends to be Ali all along, while Ali is away at a mental home. Courtney becomes "friends" with the four girls and learns about all of their secrets and keeps it in a diary. When Courtney(Ali) is supposed to be coming back from the home to visit her family, the real Ali murders her sister in revenge.

• Okay, in the last book in the series, Wanted, you learn that Alison DiLaurentis had a twin sister named Courtney DiLaurentis, who didn't live with the family due to mental issues. The twins are identical. Later on you find out that Courtney always pretended to be Alison, causing much confusion amongst the DiLaurentis family. The night that "Alison" disappeared, it was really Courtney in Spencer Hasting's barn, not Alison like the girls thought. Alison despised Courtney because back awhile ago, Courtney dumped Alison's popular friend Naomi, and traded her for 4 new "losers," who just so happened to be Hanna, Spencer, Aria, and Emily. Many of the girls adventures with whom they thought they shared with Alison, were actually with Courtney who pretended to be Alison. In the end you discover that the actual Ali killed Courtney for throwing away her perfect life. The body that was discovered in Maya's backyard was Courtney DiLaurentis. Ali is still alive, but after Mona Vanderwaal dies, Ali takes on the role of "A." So in conclusion, Alison is the killer, and she killed her twin sister, Courtney out of fury and revenge.

• SPOILER FOR BOOK 6: In book 6 killer, the author leads you on to thinking it Jason (Ally's older bro) and officer Wildon, the four girls gets hints from Ian- who turns out isn't dead! obtw the new A is a lot nicer to the 4 liars :P

  Then at the very end of the last chapter in the book officer Wildon- I think sets Spencer's barn on fire, when Spencer, Emily, and Hannah are inside, Aria is outside of the barn. Aria then sees someone ( can't see their face ) trapped with a log on top of them un able to move. aria moves the log and sets them free, and helps them get away from the fire. all thee girls that were in the barn get out okay, and all 5 of them meet up, and aria explains what happened with this random person who was stuck, and they take the hood off that was up, and wipe off the soot and dirt from this persons face, and guess who it is....

  and of the 4 girls recognize this person, but they don't recognize all four of them....it was ALLY! idk how but shes not dead, they say in the books that there was a hole in the DNA testing and they never figured out if it acutally was ally that "died" , but i guess it wasnt!

Alison DeLaurentis had a twin sister named Courtney, although none of the Pretty Little Liars knew it. They traded places and names, so Aria, Hanna, Spencer and Emily befriended Courtney under the name Ali. The REAL Alison killed her sister Courtney, but since the Liars didn't know there was a twin, they thought Ali was dead. The truth is that the Alison that THEY knew was dead, although the real one was alive. So Alison's killer is.... herself. "A" is Mona, Hanna's wannabe follower. When Mona dies at homecoming (population change, anyone?) Alison takes her place sending messages to the Liars. Ali knew everything about Aria, Hanna, Emily and Spencer because Courtney told her everything
Ali didn't die, she switched places with her insaine twin sister, Courtney and when Ali finds out that Courtney is posing as her, she strangles her and pushes her into a hole.
