What are opinions about Tate Publishing?
There are (at least) two businesses called Tate Publishing. There is a defunct work-at-home company by that name about which there is little information available. There is also a Christian book publisher based in Mustang, Oklahoma, by the name Tate Publishing, LLC, and they are a legitimate business. They receive an A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau, which is the best possible score.
Tate Publishing in Mustang, OK is a vanity publisher, who has a very good website of what I have found to be misrepresentation and outright lies.
They do have a staff of excellent sales people, but you are the one getting sold. they accept everybody that sends them their fees, (of nearly $4,000) which is about 1% of the folks who send their check before checking them out. Every real writers group in America has them on their black-list; meaning they warn their members to stay away from DR. Tate and his not so Christian vanity publishing house.
But you don't need to take mine word or anyone else for that matter. Go look at any book seller anywhere in the world (other than Tate's own) and try to find a single book they have published. I tried for several hours (I wanted to be sure before I sent my complaint to my Attorney General about their miss-leading advertising. I would not recommend any involvement with this outfit without you doing a great deal if research.
If they ask you for money, than it's a scam. Always do your research. Look up Tate Records and see if they a known record label or a legit recording label. Look up "Tate Music Group Scam" to see other people's experience with the label. An A&R usually signed artist and not the label. If an A&R asks for money, than he is a con. Most A&R's offer a contract deal and then offer money to you and you have to pay them back once your album does well in the market.
It's not a scam, but it IS more of a marketing business. I will say that a lot of the stuff they offer, you can do yourself for free or very little cost. i.e. website-40 bucks, itunes album- 26 bucks, amazon mp3, etc. IF you subtract that from 2 grand you save a LOT of money. You can also call radio stations yourself to announce your concerts which they'll most likely reject without payment anyways and TMG doesnt say they pay radio stations but that they tell them about you coming. Which lets be honest, most radios don't care unless they're paid. If you got 2 grand to blow than it might be worth a shot just to see, but if you applied there chances are you don't have a spare 2 grand. I personally am going to try itunes with my album first, if it does well on its own, i don't need them, if not, that might say something too. btw- copyrighting your CD is like 35 bucks, but trademarking your band's name is like 385 bucks so with that added you still save about 1500 dollars.

Is publishing a book profitable?
The answer is... it all depends.
There are two ways to publish books - 'traditionally' via a royalty-advance paying publisher like Harper Collins, Prentice Hall, Scholastic, etc. and 'self publishing' where the author assumes the costs of publishing his or her book.
'Traditional' publishing is almost always profitable for the author. It's frequently NOT profitable for the publisher and many statistics show that most publishers lose money on most of their books (but make it up on bestsellers.) The downside for the author to this model is that is it very unlikely that the average author will find a publisher willing to publish their book. This avenue can also be incredibly time consuming, often taking years to come to fruition, if at all.
'Self publishing' is quick, fairly easy to do, and there exist many companies who can help authors with all aspects of publishing a book. MOST of the time, authors who choose to self publish do not make a profit overall - though the individual sales of their books may be very profitable.
If you self publish your book, there are many things to think about when trying to calculate whether your book will be profitable or not: the cost of the publishing services you hire out, and -often more important - the per unit cost of each book to you (the print cost), the retail price & wholesale discount that you will offer. Mixing all these items together will give you some idea of how many books you need to sell to be profitable...
What kind of company is General Books or Books LLC?
General Books LLC are a print on demand publisher that use Optical Character Recognition to reproduce text only of books where the copyright has expired. Here is their standard disclaimer they offer wholesalers to pass on to the booksellers that can offer these for sale:
"It has no illustrations and there may be typos or missing text, this is not a set. The book may have numerous typos or missing text. It is not illustrated or indexed."
The books are quite often so poor that they are impossible to read, and are no good for reference purposes that people would want these old texts for.
Books LLC are probably the same people, they use the same printer and they print Wikipedia articles. This, naturally, is of no use to anybody.

The Internet Standard Book Number, or ISBN (sometimes pronounced "is-ben"), is a unique identifier for books, intended to be used commercially. There is another quite similar system, the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), for periodical publications such as magazines. The ISBN system was created in the United Kingdom in 1966 by the booksellers and stationers W H Smith and originally called Standard Book Numbering or SBN. It was adopted as international standard ISO 2108 in 1970.
ISBN represents the International Standard Book Number. It is a 10 didgit number that identifies books published nationally and internationally. It identifies one title or edition of a title that is specific to a publisher. It allows for more efficient marketing of products by booksellers, libraries, wholesalers and distributers
ISBN is an abbreviation for International Standard Book Number. In short, a book's ISBN acts as its fingerprint -- a unique identification number for every title in circulation. The book's ISBN is usually found both on the back of the book along with a barcode, and also listed in the front matter of the book with the book's citation information.
Book classification system - used in most libraries and book stores. If you want to find a book, you search for its ISBN.

How can you buy college textbooks directly from the publisher?
I don't think you can buy directly from the publisher. Unless you are an authorized reseller, and buying in bulk. Manufacturers don't usually sell single quantities to individuals. If price is the reason you are attempting to get one from the publisher, then I can offer an alternative - htpp://www.bigwords.com This is where you can find books for the best prices. They are a textbook search engine that searches all the online textbook retailers and rental sites to find you the best prices. And at the end of the semester you can use them to search for resellers to sell your book to. All the search results are organized by price so you can buy your books for the lowest prices and sell them back for the highest.
