Why do people hunt for rabbits?

Porcupines are herbivores. They do not hunt, but eat plants instead. They especially like tree bark.

My rabbit just had baby's is there something I need to do for her or her kits?

It is a known fact that breeders breed rabbits from the same family to line up the genes they want to produce. Better quality litters is what they strive for. You can handle the kits but first run your hands on mom to get her scent. Also be sure to take kits away from mom starting at 4 weeks to wean them, starting with the biggest and every 2 days remove another. If you sell the kits they will be ready at 8 weeks of age Rabbits know by instinct how to take care of them so as long as they have plump tummies (meaning that she is feeding them) have lots of warm bedding (the mom should of plucked her fur out for them). If you have concerns then you should talk to a vet. You should check through the babies with a spoon or something (being very, very gentle) to make sure that they are all still alive and have plump tummies and no shriveled up skin every day.

Don't handle the babies unless ABSOLUTELY necessary until they are old enough (use google to find out this i can't remember).

In terms of the mother make sure she has plenty of food (she will eat A LOT) and water. You will probably never see her with or nursing the babies but don't worry. This is normal. It is because in the wild they don't go near the nest except to feed them when they think it is safe because they are afraid that they will show predators where the nest is.

This is all I know but if you would like to know more google or the library are good places to look. :)

Hope that helps.

P.S. This knowledge comes from research on the internet and my friend 's rabbit having babies while I was babysitting her.

Also you should try to find homes for the babies before they need to be taken away from their mother and siblings (so that they don't breed more and you don't have a rabbit explosion) so that you know where they will go as soon as they are old enough. What age this is (that they need to be taken away) I cannot fully remember but it is on Google if you search for it.

If you are planning to keep them then you are going to need some more cages (the females can be housed together but the males should not necessarily be because they will fight. and then you could keep a male and female together if you neutered the male).

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU SHOULD NEVER BREED RABBITS FROM THE SAME FAMILY TOGETHER BECAUSE THIS IS INBREEDING AND WILL RESULT IN SEVERE DEFORMITY ON THE BABY'S PART AND IT IS NOT GOOD FOR THE MOTHER EITHER.

Why doesn't rabbit poop stink?

Rabbits actually excrete two types of "poop", partially digested cecals (aka "night feces") and fully digested feces. True feces are firmer and smaller, having been fully processed by the rabbit; while the feces isn't entirely odourless, it does have very little smell. Cecals are formed in the large intestines and are reingested by the rabbit in order to absorb certain vitamins and minerals; they are a little larger and moister than true feces and may have slightly more aroma.

The lack of noticeable smell in either form is most likely due to the nature of a healthy rabbit's diet. Rabbits are true herbivores (plant eaters) and the high fibre content of their diet produces drier feces with little waste remaining.

Can you have a pet rabbit if you have artificial grass in the backyard?

Yes, just make sure that it doesn't eat any of the plastic pebbles underneath! That's dangerous!

How do you help a baby bunny when it cant breath?

Having delivered many human babies, equine foals, dogs, calves, etc. I presume rabbits are the same. If the bunny gets stuck in the birth canal, both will die. If you try to pull it out you can injure the mother by tearing the birth canal, causing bleeding or damaging the ureter or rectum and/or vagina. It is a tough call, probably gentle traction is the best bet. If not down far enough for this, you must try to push it back in, turn it around and try to deliver headfirst. This is difficult enough with a human or a horse, let alone a rabbit when all you can use is your finger. If you do this, use a glove and betadyne, since you will be pushing germs into the rabbit and possibly cause infection. Work in between contractions.

Does a rabbit protect her den for the kittens?

yes

No.

If your rabbit was wild, and there were rats around, she'd move her babies to a safer nest, or she would abandon them. It is very unlikely that she'd stick around and fight the rats. That's just not what rabbits do.

Because they're your pets, your rabbit can't move her babies to a safe place. As their owner, that's your job to make the nest safe. If the babies are newborn and there are rats around, your rabbit might eat her babies. If the babies are more grown than that, she may let the rats steal them or she may try and fight the rats. Letting your pet fight a wild animal probably counts as criminal negligence (although laws differ from place to place); either way, it's terribly immoral.

Is a rabbit monogamous or polygamous?

The red fox is monogamous during the mating and birthing season and, sometimes, for life. If the female dies before the kits are raised, the male will raise them.

How are rabbits killed to make a fur coat?

They are killed by internal electrocution or poisoned. The rabbit farmers take care not to damage the animals fur. Fur farmers argue that cruelty is not imposed on the animal during the operation. They say that any physical abuse to the animal during the process would make the animals fur useless. The animal, which is normally 10 to 12 weeks old, suffers a painful death, but at least the precious fur is protected.

Rabbits raised for their fur lead miserable lives in cramped and overcrowded conditions, often suffer from injuries inflicted by their cage-mates, and many die early deaths from their injuries. Rabbits raised for fur is a fiercely debated topic between fur advocates and animal rights groups such as the Animal Liberation Front.

Do a video search for farms and you can see first hand the conditions that these condemned animals live in.

Do rabbits have diarrhea?

Rabbits often have a pungent grape-like cluster of soft stool called a cecotrope, this is not diarrhea and is in fact reingested (aka eaten) by the rabbit to retain essential nutrients. These cecotropes should be left in the cage for at least a short period of time so they can be reingested. However, cesotropes can become overly soft and runny and can be the result of not eating enough crude fiber or a diet too high in indigestible carbohydrates.

If, however, it is diarrhea and persists for more than a day you should take your pet to a veterinarian immediately as this could be any number of potentially fatal conditions.

At what age can a baby rabbit be handled by humans?

Baby rabbits should be checked as soon as they are born to make sure that there were no dead babies born in the litter. The dead ones should be removed immediately. Then the babies (kits) should be checked briefly every day to make sure they are all alive and their nest is dry and clean. When they are about 10 days old they will start popping up out of the nesting material to see what is going on because their eyes will now be open. At about 2 weeks you can start holding them for a few minutes of time, this will get them used to you and tame them down if you are planning on selling them as pets. When you go to check your newborn babies or hold them when they are older make sure your hands are clean and don't smell like soap, lotion, dogs or cats. This might offend the mothers sense of smell and cause her to abandon them. But if you use common sense and clean dry hands it is safe to check them once a day.

How can you tell if a baby rabbit is male or female?

Baby rabbits are born with a penis or vagina. Male rabbits keep their penises inside them, and it pops out when they are ready to mate. Until a rabbit's testicles drop (when they're born, the testicles are inside the abdomen), it is very difficult to tell if a rabbit is male or female. A rabbit's testicles drop around 4-5 months of age. See the related question below for details about how to tell if a rabbit is male or female.

When do the baby rabbit gets out of the nest?

A baby rabbit will get its fur at around 7 days, open its eyes around 10 days & they will leave the nest anytime between opening their eyes to 3 weeks. Enjoy them being in the nest as once they come out they will be all over the place & things get more difficult. hope this helps & Enjoy your little ones!

A baby rabbit will start getting fur at 3 days of age and you will be able to tell what variety (color) it is, They open their eyes at 10 days and will start getting out of the nest by 2 weeks and are ready to have nest box removed by 4 weeks. (at 4 weeks it becomes a sanitation issue.)

Do you have to remove the male rabbit from the cage after the female rabbit has given birth?

The buck (male rabbit) should not be near a doe (female rabbit) who is kindling or newborn kits (baby rabbits). The buck will get too excited and the doe will get overwraught. As he trys to rebreed her (rabbits are capable of rebreeding as soon as she kindles) and she tries to get away and/or protect the newborns they probably will both stomp the kits flat. Even in the wild the male rabbit is not welcome in the nest until babies start to come out to nibble on grasses.(about 2 to 3 weeks). In addition, if the male is stressed or has not been fed properly it will kill the kits.

How do rabbits get the food they eat?

They use their sense! Like you should and not use wiki answers! GOSH
Animals obtain their food a number of ways;

1) Scavenging for scraps that other animals have left behind

2) Killing and eating other animals

3) Collect and gather vegetation

There are many other ways that they obtain their food, but sadly I do not know them.

How high can a bunny jump?

Those little monsters can jump up to 2 feet high straight up. They would jump that high to get away from trouble, find a mate, or to munch on your vegetable garden. They tear that up where I come from (MD).

Will a mother rabbit take her baby rabbits out of the nest?

Yes, when a rabbit mother is about 28 days pregnant she will pull fur from her stomach and from under her chin and birth her rabbits there at about 31 days. But keep in mind you should put in some kind of nest box where she can do this.

How do you clip your rabbit's nails?

One Option: Get your vet to do it for you.

Take them to your vet and ask for a vet nurse to clip them. Rabbits don't really like having their nails cut so sometimes it's best to let the professionals do the job.

When you do something your rabbit doesn't like, he'll struggle against you, and then he can easily injure himself or you can accidentally injure him. Rabbits are delicate animals and easier to injure than cats or dogs. If you aren't confident handling a struggling rabbit, don't do it!

If you're new to clipping rabbit nails, go to the vet the first few times. Observe the vet and ask him or her to teach you. After the first few times, you might be comfortable doing it at home yourself.

Another Option: Do it yourself.

Use special nail clippers for rabbits that look like scissors, but the razor is round and small. You also need to occupy your rabbit with something like a carrot.

It takes some practice, but after the first nail or so you feel more comfortable about doing it. I begin by flipping the rabbit onto its back and holding it like a baby, tight against my body. I start with the bottom feet as they are easiest to do. With white colored nails you will easily see a pink line. This is the quick, and if you cut it, it will bleed and cause slight pain for the rabbit (similar to cutting too far on your own nails).

If you can't see the quick (if the nail is black), shine a flashlight under the nail and the quick will be revealed, or use the "squeeze-squeeze-clip" method: squeeze the nail twice with the scissors without clipping, and if the rabbit doesn't flinch that means you're safely above the quick.

Once you feel comfortable with the bottom feet give the front a try exactly the same as the back.

You should have some styptic powder or blood stopper for nails (at most pet stores) on hand in case you cut the quick and the rabbit bleeds: just dab it on the end of the nail to stop the bleeding. Flour and cornstarch also work to stop the bleeding, but they don't stop the pain like styptic powder does.

NOTE: It is helpful to have a second person hold the bunny.

You also don't have to turn the rabbit over. In fact, with many rabbits it's better not to because they might panic and injure themselves. Instead, sit your rabbit on a towel (on your lap, on the ground, or on a table surface) and hold her firmly. Some rabbits won't sit still and will need to be restrained. Have someone with you to help. Covering the rabbit's eyes (lightly, with your hands) may be enough to calm her; if not, something more advanced is necessary. Next time you're at the vet, ask them to show you how to restrain your rabbit. You can also type the phrase "bunny burrito" into a search engine - this is one method many people find useful.

Good to Know - Why Clip the Nails? If you don't clip your bunny's nails, they'll grow too long and injury will result. For example, the nail could get easily caught and torn out. Or, the long nails could cause the rabbit to stand with more pressure on the back of the feet, resulting in a condition called "sore hocks."

Do rabbits hold grudges?

Rabbits react to other rabbits in different ways, just like humans react to other humans in different ways, depending on the individuals involved.

Spaying/neutering your rabbits will greatly increase the likelihood that they'll get along. (This is only one of many reasons why you should spay/neuter your rabbits.)

There are many good reasons to bond two (or sometimes more!) rabbits together. Rabbits are social animals and appreciate company. Bonding can sometimes be a difficult process, though. There are many resources online that can help you (see links below).

Some things to consider:

Male rabbits can fight when they are with another male (especially when they aren't neutered and there's a female around -- they can fight to the death).

Male rabbits can be kept with female rabbits if they have both been neutered but sometimes they can be a bit aggressive to each other.

Females can be kept together but they can get a bit aggressive but not as much as males.

Any rabbits that are kept together need a big hutch (double ones are best) and enough room.

Can a jackrabbit be a pet?

No, jackrabbits are wild animals and they can't be kept as pets. In some rare circumstances, if the jackrabbit is abandoned by the mother as a baby and someone finds it, then a professional wildlife rehabber may be able to hand-raise the rabbit -- in that case, it will be kept as a pet, probably for life. However, people who have no experience hand-raising rabbits shouldn't try it because the chances of survival are very low. Also, people often think they've found an abandoned baby rabbit, when in fact the rabbit is not abandoned at all, and the mother is on her way back. Do not disturb a nest of wild animals unless you're positive they've been abandoned and you know how to hand-raise them. See the related link below for more details.
Wild rabbits typically do not do well when caged or in any way kept as a pet, just like any other wild animal. Domestic rabbits are just that - domesticated, over hundreds and hundreds of years. Sometimes a jackrabbit is found ill or injured, or a baby is abandoned; in that case, an experienced wildlife rehabber can take care of the animal and, if possible, release it back into the wild when it's better. This is a big undertaking, though, and should not be attempted by inexperienced people. Generally speaking, wild animals should be left alone.

Can rabbits have newspaper as there litter?

they deffinatly can, but as whole pieces, it is better if you use it to put under their normal bedding, like straw or shavings. you can shred it, then that would be suitable. make sure you put more bedding in the sleeping and toilet area. Some inks come off (they are harmless), but the rabbit can get very grubby from the inks.
