How does rabies cause fear of water?

Hydrophobia (fear of water) is a classical sign of terminal rabies infection. This isn't a true "fear" but is rather a reasonable response to the lack of control over the mouth and throat - drinking water could result in aspiration of that water into the lungs, a painful and potentially lethal problem.

Can rabies be spread through air?

Few cases are on record. The cave explorers have got rabies, when they entered the South American caves, inhabited with millions of vampire bats. But this mode of transmission is questionable. As the vampire bats bite, there teeth are like hypodermic needles. So the person may not note the bite. secondly the caves are very dangerous and the explorers must be psychologically tense at times. They may not note the bite by the bats in such a situation.

What are the signs and symptoms of rabies?

Malaise, fever and headache are early stages of rabies. Later the rabies progresses to acute pain, hydrophobia (fear of water), violent movements, depression and uncontrolled excitement. The victim in the end stages will experience mania and lethargy which often leads to a coma. The patient will eventually die of insufficient respiration.

Why is rabies a problem?

Rabies is a viral disease that is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal. Without treatment rabies is invariably fatal.

Can aquatic mammals get rabies?

Short answer: yes, but it is highly unlikely.

Long answer:

According to my infectious diseases study materials, rabies can affect ANY mammal.

Now, when I read that I thought just like you: really? even, say, a whale? wow!

So then I was on my way to google to find out, and what I found is that technically, it IS possible, but as the most common rabies carriers (dogs, foxes, coyotes, cats, raccoons, bats...) are landlubbers it is highly unlikely. However, there has been one reported case of a rabid seal (probably bit by a coyote on the beach). Now, say that the seal was to bite a whale, the whale would get infected. Cool, huh? Only, I don't see seals biting whales as a very common thing, but yeah, definitely possible.

Could a human die from rabies?

The rabies virus can remain in certain body tissues after death. There have been documented cases of transmitting rabies through organ transplants, for example, cornea transplants taken from someone who had undiagnosed illness. There are also some very recent reports (March 2009) of individuals contracting the rabies virus by eating infected dogs and cats.

Do mice get rabies?

Rabies is a disease that is transmitted among mammals, but the vast majority of mammals do not have rabies. An animal with rabies is almost certain to die from it unless it is treated promptly.

Is corn rabi or kharif?

Kharif crops include plants such as sugarcane, soybeans, and rice. They are planted from April to May and harvested once the monsoon rains end. Rabi crops include things such as wheat, barley, and peas. They are planted in September and October and harvested once winter is over.

What are the symptoms associated with rabies?

Are there only two types of rabies?

Yes.

The two types are furious rabies and paralytic rabies.

In furious rabies, the animal starts being restless, then becomes highly excitable and will snap at anything in reach. Even humans with this type of rabies have been known to bite others. Eventually paralysis sets in. As paralysis begins to set in, salivation increases and swallowing becomes more difficult causing the well known sign of "foam around the mouth".

In paralytic rabies, the animal has minimal excitability and often remains relatively quiet and may even seem unaware of it's surroundings. The animal may become irritable and bite if handled. Paralytic rabies is especially common in cats.

Rabies is a viral infection of the central nervous system and attacks the brain. Without treatment, rabies is always fatal within just a few days.

Why do rats carry rabies?

Rats not not always carry rabies, in fact most do not a an animal that has been infected does not have very long to live. Any mammal can carry rabies, but rats are among the more likely candidates as many rats can live in the same area, increasing potential for transmission form one animal to another.

Are fox rabies common?

Yes, foxes do fall under the RVS catagory. RVS stands for Rabies Vector Species, which means that they can contract and spread the disease to other animals. Foxes are on the hot list, as well as skunks, bats, raccoons, and many other animals.

Can you be born with rabies?

If the mother is infected with rabies while in late term pregnancy with the offspring, then those offspring could be born infected with rabies. More likely, however, is that the mother will either not be far enough along to deliver term offspring prior to succumbing to rabies herself or the infection will cause her to abort the offspring and/or abandon them to die.

How can rabies be prevented?

Rabies can be prevented by vaccinating pets ( dogs, cats, rabbits, and ferrets) and educating people. If people would only understand that death is almost always the outcome, fewer people would get this disease. Do not handle wild animals or strays. Contact an animal control officer upon observing a wild animal or a stray. Beside pets, people can be vaccinated, too. This especially true for people who live in areas where the number of rabies cases is high. People who work with bats should be vaccinated as well.

Can a mole give you rabies?

Yes. I can get the rabies. But it will not transmit the disease to other animals.

How do animals or insects get or have rabies?

for one thing, bugs cannot get rabies. only mammals can get it. what happens is one mammal bites another mammal and the bitten one gets rabies. rabies is transferred through Silva. so when a rabid animal bites through skin, it's Silva (or spit) seeps into the wound and infects the bitten animal.

Where is rabies most prevalent?

It depends on the region. In the southwest it is spread by several sources. Racoons, skunks, bats and coyotes. Never ever touch a bat dead or alive and always question why a skunk or raccon is wandering around in broad daylight. Most northern sates are not as affected by rabies and have only one strain coming mostly from wild animals/stray dogs in the summertime.

In Texas Rabies is epidemic, year round and there are several strains. It's proximity to Mexico where rabid coyotes and dogs regularly cross the shallow Rio Grande. There have been summers so bad that animal control authorites are ordered to shoot all stray dogs on site whether or not they are wearing tags. In winter time the Raccoons and skunks are whats called "reserviors" or carriers of rabies so the rabies virus can survive through to the spring. Bats in caves year round will sometimes have a rabies infection rate of 100% and one can catch it just by breathing the air in the cave. Also in epidemics animals not know to carry Rabies will have cases. Such as horses and hamsters.

Rabies isn't just spread by bites. Unvacinated kittens eating from a dish that a rabid skunk ate out of night before. Rabies symptoms are not always the ferocious dog foaming at the mouth. They can be lethargic or fearfull, or show no symptoms at all.

Please Allways ALLWAYS keep your pets up to date on rabies vacinations. Keep a collar with a current tag on your dog and cat at all times especially if it spends time outside. Do not allow your dog to run loose. Use caution dealing with stray kittens or cats. And especially do not pick up an injured or young wild mammal with your bare hands. Use traps, nooses and crates, etc if you must. If you live in urban area and a wild animal is hanging around your home - call the anmal control authorites imediately. Do not attempt to deal with it on your own.

I could go on and on. But basically you just cant be too carefull.
