What type of home do raccoons have?
Raccoons do not harm the environment. They are omnivores. Therefore, they play a vital role in the food chain. They eat carrion, which is important because without them, animal carcasses would litter the countryside. In addition, they eat berries and nuts, which helps spread their seeds. They also serve as prey for medium-sized predators, such as coyotes, owls, and cougars.
Raccoons do pose certain threats to the human population, however. They spread a particularly virulent form of roundworm that can be fatal to humans, as well as fleas, lice ticks, and rabies.
The most important principle in dealing with raccoons is to shut up food and garbage at night so as not to attract them. If every homeowner and business would follow that guideline, there would be few raccoon problems.

What does a scared raccoon sound like?
I am a wildlife rehabber in Indiana that specializes in our misunderstood masked ringtailed devils! When raccoons are scared they will "puff up" ( much like a cat does) to appear larger than they are so you will be afraid of them and leave them alone. They would much rather run from you then have a confontation with you. Their growl is a husky almost gurgling sound which if cornered could be followed by a painful bite! The babies if startled have a wootie sound which my team mates at I refer to as a "wootie woot" Hope this helps..

Can you keep a raccoon as a pet?
You can... but the majority of people would not want to because of:
A: rabies
B: They are nocturnal
and
C: They rarely make contact with humans, and you wouldn't have a good relationship with it.
Actually, only some states will allow raccoons as pets, most not at all, & the ones that do require a special permit or rehabilitation license. Yes, there is a chance of rabies, as with most animals, & they are nocturnal, but they can be given rabies & distemper shots just like dogs & cats. Also, they can actually bond quite well with humans, but it takes time & work. They are a full time job even after they are tamed because they are so active & curious about everything. They will open cabinets, spill things, & "steal" things. They are also messy eaters. They can give you a lot of pleasure & love, but you have to be very dedicated to them as well. Just something to consider when making your decision.
i agree only some states allow it because it is illegal in some states unless you have a license to keep wild animals
Do we need raccoons in a habitat?
In a natural habitat yes u do, everything is important to the circle of life for example if wolves went extinct the elk, moose, deer and others population would grow to be so big there wouldn't be enough food and a lot of em would die. Wolves usually only kill weak or sick ones, which actually strenthens the herd. Raccoons have a place among this too, if one animal becomes extinct it can make a bunch of others extinct or endangered! DONT KILL RACCOONS!

What is the food washing habit of a raccoon?
I have a visiting racoon that has been eating grubs out of our lawn. She/he kept coming up on our porch and back deck using the dog's water bowl to wash her/his food off. Each time causing the water bowl to get filled with mud. So, we gave her/him it's own water bowl down off of the deck to use, and it worked. The bowl has dirt in it every morning, so we empty it and fill it with fresh water to use. It has kept the racoon from coming up on the porch and deck and even looking in our windows.
