How to gain weight?

User Avatar

Asked by Josefina Kunze

How to gain weight Weight gain is something that isn't easy to do and you probably know this already. I know first hand because it is something I have to do every day. I am an ectomorph by genetics, which is the "skinny body type" and the one with the fast metabolism which makes gaining so hard for guys like me. The key to weight gain is to do everything BIG. You have to eat big, to lift big, to get big. Say that over and over again in your head until you fully understand it. A lot of people think Weightlifting is the key to gaining weight, and I won't argue, it is an extremely important part. BUT, there is another thing that is just as important when it comes to how to gain weight, and that is your diet. So, to put it as simply as possible, there are 5 simple steps to how to gain weight, and here they are: 1) Count how many calories you eat in a normal day. Don't change anything, just eat like you normally would and count how many calories you consumed. This is an extremely important step, so try to be as exact as possible. Also, weigh yourself. 2) Starting the day after you counted calories, eat 500 calories MORE then you normally do. So, lets pretend that the day you counted calories you counted 2000. For the rest of the week, you would now eat 2500 calories a day. Instead of eating 3 big meals a day or eating all day all the time, spread those calories out over 5-6 smaller meals. Eat one meal every 2 and a half to 3 hours. To get big, you have to eat big! Remember that. 3) Weightlifting! Get in the gym and lift! This is another important step to how to gain weight, so make sure you are doing it correctly. For more information on weightlifting workout routines and splits. 4) At the end of that week, weigh yourself. You'll notice you're gaining just after one week! Now, don't expect to see a 10lb increase. Gaining anymore then 1 or 2 pounds a week is unhealthy and means you're putting on way to much fat. So look for 1 or 2 pound gains at the end of the week. Don't sound like much? You can be gaining 5-8 pounds a month! 5) Heres an important one. At some point, you will stop seeing weight gain. At this point, you will have to eat even more. So, when you stop gaining for at least 2 weeks, it means it is time to start eating an extra 250 calories a day. Every time you see you haven't gained weight for at least 2 weeks, add an extra 250 calories.

Who was the first person to discover eating meat?

No one know exactly when humans began eating meat, but it probably began millions of years ago. Chimpanzees - our closest relatives, and who share 98% of our DNA - also eat meat. They eat meat sparingly though, and it composes only 1% of their diet. A majority of their diet is composed of fruits.

Is the Keto diet effective?

User Avatar

Asked by Elta Frami

the short answer is YES! but let me explain:

The keto diet has its roots in the decades-old therapeutic ketogenic diet. Clinically, the ketogenic diet is used to reduce hard-to-control seizures in children. Studies also suggest possible benefits in other brain conditions such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

Fairly recently, the diet was introduced as a weight-loss diet by an Italian professor of surgery, Dr. Gianfranco Cappello of Sapienza University in Rome. In his 2012 study, about 19,000 dieters received a high-fat liquid diet via a feeding tube inserted down the nose. The study showed an average weight loss of more than 20 pounds in participants, most of whom kept it off for at least a year. The researchers reported a few minor side effects, like fatigue.

The medical community is taking note of the high public interest in keto. A 2018 article in JAMA summarized several areas of promise:

Many people feel less hungry on the high-fat keto diet and so may naturally reduce their overall calorie intake.

Beyond weight loss, there was good news for diabetes management, with improved insulin sensitivity and blood-sugar control for people following a ketogenic diet in an early, still-ongoing study.

What do Indians in the USA mostly eat Why?

User Avatar

Asked by Janick McGlynn

Indians start with bread and pasta, end up with their origin-Indian Cuisine. Indian Cuisine is a combination of many sub-cuisines as they have too many cultures and so as too many food delicacies. Cooking is a tiring job when you have too many dishes to prepare as Indian cuisines are not just about sabzi roti but also served with pickle, sides as salad/ onion slices and of course Farsan along with rice and dal. It's a full dish with sides and not to miss out, a glass full of chhas or kadhi. Making it would definitely a tiring job but that's where the launch of "ready-to-Eat" helped. There are so many players in the market serving Indian brands including spices, snacks, sweets and much more,

Even they do have ready-to-eat packs as well. If you'd ever want to try Indian food, don't bother cooking one, instead order it online with "Kesar Grocery"

They have been serving the market for the past 5 years and providing all Indian Brands offers. I hope you find it useful.

What is the keto diet?

User Avatar

Asked by Elsa Champlin

Sounds a little like a 4:00 AM infomercial type of diet, doesn’t it?

But that’s the promise of the Ketogenic Diet (keto) diet and the reason it’s hot, hot, hot.

Depending on who you ask, keto is either the best diet ever or a dangerous fraud.

Keto is a high fat, moderate protein and low carb diet. You’re going to be eating a boat load of fat while nearly eliminating carbs from your diet. That means skipping pasta, bread, pizza and beer. Instead you’ll eat nuts, avocados, pork rinds and full fat cheese.

The only real difference between keto and Atkins or other low carb diets is protein consumption. Protein consumption is much more limited in keto.

I’ll cut through the hype to explain what you need to know so you can make an informed decision. (Teaser alert: the truth lies somewhere between the extreme positions. And there are different strokes for different folks. Your personality type and ability to stick with a very restricted diet should play a huge role in your decision.)

Before we dive into the #sciencey stuff and cautions, let’s get to the good stuff.

THE GOOD PART: THE BENEFITS OF KETO

The Ketogenic Diet has some pretty sweet benefits, including putting a high priority on bacon consumption. Beyond that, there’s:

Weight Loss – As explained below, keto uses your body fat for energy, helping you lose weight. Fat burning becomes your primary fuel source. Your insulin levels drop which helps prevent fat storage.

Blood Sugar – With a lack of sugar in your system, studies even show that keto is a more effective than low calorie diets in preventing diabetes. If you’re pre-diabetic or have Type II diabetes, consult your doctor about the wisdom of adopting a Ketogenic Diet.

Insulin Resistance – Insulin resistance can lead to type II diabetes if left unmanaged. If you go low carb, your body can become more insulin sensitive.

Ninja Focus – There’s no denying mental focus is a big draw for keto, ranking right behind fat loss. By limiting the up and downs of insulin spikes with a carb diet, you’ll be able to improve focus and concentration.

Increase Energy and Normalize Hunger – By giving your body a more consistent energy sources, you’ll avoid the dips after the insulin spike. On top of that, fat is naturally more satisfying and ends up leaving you in a full state for longer.

Epilepsy – This is the reason the Ketogenic Diet came into existence. It is still one of the most widely used therapies for people who have medicine-resistent epilepsy.

Cholesterol and Blood Pressure – A ketogenic diet has shown to improve triglyceride levels and cholesterol levels most associated with arterial buildup despite the high fat. Low-carb, high-fat diets show a dramatic increase in HDL (good cholesterol) and decrease in LDL (bad cholesterol) particle concentration compared to low-fat diets..

Acne – It’s common to see improvements in your skin when you switch to a ketogenic diet.

THE BAD PART: SIDE EFFECTS OF KETO

When introducing something new to your body, there are always side effects. The big thing to ask yourself is Are the benefit orders of magnitude better than the side effects?

For example, if you were to take a medicine for a social anxiety and a side effect was loss of bladder control, I might opt to keep thinking people are judging me rather than fear peeing in my pants at free random.

Thankfully, loss of bladder control and leakage aren’t on the table with the Ketogenic diet. I’ve also sprinkled in some remedies to mitigate the downside. You’re welcome..

Keto flu – ask anyone that has tried a low carb diet they’ll tell you the struggle is real. The first 2-3 days are a rough.

The most common symptoms:

Headache Fatigue Dizziness Nausea Irritability

As you get further into ketosis these subside, within a week you’ll be fine.

Now the Keto marketers in the group will tell you that the Keto flu is your body detoxing from the harmful effects of carbs or ridding your body of toxic sludge.

When you go low carb, you end up pissing all those out, much like you would after a good night of drinking.

Notice the symptoms are the same as a hangover?

Once your body adapts to the new environment you’re aces. Or if you want to make a smoother transition into ketosis, increase salt intake by drinking a cup of bouillon or chicken broth a couple times a day.

If that doesn’t sound appetizing, just add extra salt your food or water.

Within just a couple days of cutting out carbs, the body will increase ketone concentrations and the brain will begin making the switch. From beginning to full ketosis is about a four week process, provided it’s done consistently.

If you’ve gotten this far I guess you’re interested. You still have a lot of questions? There is a really good resource on keto diet and recipes you can check out.

Which diet is better for fat loss: keto diet or low fat diets?

User Avatar

Asked by Meda Jacobson

What is a keto diet?

Keto diets mainly involve the drastic reduction of one’s carbohydrate intake, and replacing it with fats. Reducing the carb content like this puts the body in a metabolic state known as ketosis.

In this state, your body is able to efficiently burn fat for energy. It can also convert fats in the liver into ketones. This helps supply energy for the brain.

Keto diets can have several health benefits, such as reduced blood sugar and insulin levels. However, they can also come with side effects that we will discuss later.

Non-Vegetarian Keto Diet Plan

A typical keto diet plan is low on carbohydrates, while being high in protein and fats. The following is a non-vegetarian keto diet plan that one can follow.

Time Meal

6:30 AM

Bulletproof coffee without sugar

8:00 AM

Scrambled eggs with cheese

12:30 PM

Roasted chicken breast

Lettuce, cucumber and mushroom salad with olive oil and vinegar dressing

4:00 PM

Soda with lemon

8:00 PM

Tandoori chicken with mint chutney

Vegetarian Keto Diet Plan

A keto diet’s primary requirement is to be low-carb, and high-protein. Vegetarians that wish to follow the low-carb diet can refer to the vegetarian diet plan shown below.

Time Meal

6:30 AM

Bulletproof coffee without sugar

8:00 AM

Paneer mushroom bhurji with spinach

12:30 PM

Keto flour roti with soya bhurji

4:00 PM

Lemon soda without sugar

8:00 PM

Broccoli mushroom stir fry with cheese

In spite of the keto diet’s immediate results, nutritionists generally do not recommend it. Ideally, it is best to maintain a balanced diet that provides an individual with all the necessary nutrients. You can understand how to follow the ideal Indian diet plan here.

5 Foods to Avoid on a Ketogenic Diet

Foods that are rich in carbs, and low on fats, must be avoided by any individual following a keto diet. Avoid eating the following foods while on a ketogenic diet.

  1. Cereal

While sugary breakfast cereals are known to contain a lot of carbs, the amount of carbs present in the healthy cereals will surprise you. One cup of regular or instant oatmeal provides 32 g of carbs, only 4 of which are fiber.

A bowl of cereal can easily help you cross the carb limit on a keto diet, even before the milk is added.

  1. Juice

Fruit juice contains several important nutrients. However, they also contain fast-digesting carbs that cause one’s blood sugar levels to rise rapidly.

The liquid carbs in juice may not allow your brain to process them in the same way as solid carbs. Thus, drinking juice could lead to more hunger and increased craving for food later in the day.

  1. Starchy Vegetables

Plenty of vegetables are high in fiber, thus aiding in weight loss, and blood sugar control. However, some high-starch vegetables contain more digestible carbs than fiber, and should be avoided on a low-carb diet.

Ideally, vegetables like corn and sweet potato must be avoided while one is on a low-carb diet like the keto one is.

  1. Sweetened Yogurt

While plain yogurt is fairly low in carbs, the sweetened version can contain as many carbs as a dessert. A cup of nonfat sweetened fruit yogurt can have almost 47 g of carbs, which is higher than the carbohydrate content for a similar serving of ice cream.

Ideally, sweetened yogurt can be replaced by Greek yogurt topped with blackberries or raspberries while on a keto diet.

keto diet

Use Greek Yogurt to replace Sweetened Yogurt

  1. Beans and Legumes

Beans and legumes provide several health benefits such as reduced risk of heart disease and inflammation. Although they are high in fiber, they do have a fair amount of carbs.

While you may include them in small amounts, it is better to avoid beans and legumes altogether while on a keto diet.

7 Keto Benefits

These low-carb diets do have their own advantages, nonetheless. Here are 7 health benefits of the keto diet.

  1. Reduced Appetite

One of the main side effects of following a diet is hunger cravings. While this may lead to a lot of people giving up on their diets, a keto diet results in the reduction of one’s appetite. Studies have shown that this happens due to the cutting down of carbs, and the increased protein and fat intake. This eventually leads to a lower calorie intake.

  1. Weight Loss

An effective way to lose weight would be to simply cut down on your carb intake.

Studies comparing low-carb and low-fat diets have found that the former can help one lose 2-3 times the weight as the latter, without the individual being hungry.

However, one study found that the diet is particularly effective only for 6 months. After this, it works like any other weight loss diet.

  1. Improved Heart Health

A keto diet plan can prove to be very efficient in improving one’s heart health. Eating more fat helps improve the HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein), or good cholesterol, levels in the body. Low-carb diets, like the keto diet, have a lot of fat.

How do people survive on a “carnivore” diet?

User Avatar

Asked by Anya Kub

Fiber isn't needed for regular bowel movements, diabetes is caused by sugar AND fat not just fat, the study correlating cancer with red meat technically only found less than one percent risk increase (not to mention it was for omnivores on the Standard American Diet), and scurvy doesn't happen because glucose competes with Vitamin C so now it has no competition also lower inflammation so absorption is higher. There's very little evidence to suggest that they would suffer any significant health problems, but then again, we still don't really know the details. Now that there are a couple thousand participants of said diet we might see some studies in the near to distant future!
