What have red poppies got to do with WW1?

Poppies actually came from WWI, not WWII. There was a major battle on Flanders Fields where thousands lost their lives. After the battle poppies grew where the men had died and a poem was written called "Flanders Field"

Here is the text of that poem

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Ever since then, veterans have sold poppies at the entrances to stores as a way to raise money for disabled veterans groups and now the poppies stand for all veterans of all wars.

Why do some remembrance poppies have leaves?

The red (petals) represents the blood that was spilt and the green (leaves) represents the green fields of France, which was formerly "No Man's Land" in World War One. The leaf is also positioned in the "11-o'clock" position on the clock, to symbolise the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month (when Armistice was signed).

Poppies are visible on of the former European battlefields, as poppies naturally grow in disturbed earth in Europe. So they were seen as a fitting tribute as the poppies rise up where many men have fallen on the fields.

How Do We Remember?

On November 11, especially, but also throughout the year, we have the opportunity to remember the efforts of all soldiers and war veterans who fought to keep our countries free from dictatorship. Why did they use poppies on Memorial Day?

  • The reason poppies were chosen to represent veterans was because they grew quickly in the disturbed battlefields of the First World War and their vast numbers were linked to the numbers of dead from the conflict.
  • In the battlefields of Belgium during World War I, poppies grew wild amid the ravaged landscape. How could such a pretty little flower grow wild while surrounded by death and destruction? The overturned soils of battle enabled the poppy seeds to be covered, thus allowing them to grow and to forever serve as a reminder of the bloodshed during that time and for the future.

Answer:

Lt. John MacCrae wrote a poem now called "In Flanders Field" (see link) when he watched his friend die during World War 1.

Several years later, a woman named Moina Michaels was reading over the poem and was struck by the last few lines:

If ye break faith with us who die

Why are poppies worn on Remembrance Day?

Poppies symbolise remembrance.

The story goes that, following one of the bloodiest battles of World War I, in the fields of Flanders in western Europe, when the ground was completely churned up and muddied, thousands of red poppies sprang up. The seeds had lain dormant in the soil and, after being aerated with the churning of the soil from the soldiers' boots and fertilised with their blood, the poppies grew abundantly, springing forth new life from death.

This is why poppies are worn on Remembrance Day (commemorating Armistice Day) as well as ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand, and other solemn occasions when we remember the soldiers who fought or even gave their lives for our freedom.

Another reason poppies came to such prominence in association with World War I is because of how they were immortalised in that most famous poem of WWI, In Flanders Fields, written by John McCrae. This poem is spoken at memorial services everywhere on both ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day.

Another famous Poem, "We shall keep the faith" written in 1918, included these words:
"and now the torch and Poppy Red,
we wear in honour of our dead".
