By 870 I assume you mean the Model 870 shotgun? If so, there would be no purpose for that type of conversion. Shotshell primers are of the 209 size. The 209 "conversion" is done with muzzle loaders. The idea is to replace the muzzle loader nipple (that holds the cap) with a conversion unit that uses the 209 shotshell primer to get more positive ignition of the black powder.

Based on the serial number, it was manufactured in 1944.

Also, it was made by Colt. If the slide reads Remington Rand that means someone put a Remington rand slide on your colt frame.

The frame was certainly made by Colt and serialized in 1944. The slide may have been replaced in a refurbishment later on (early 50's) during the Korean War.

The .17 HMR is a very flat shooting cartridge. To sight your rifle in place a target (paper plate will work) up at 25 yards. Start with a steady rest on a solid table or bench and shoot at the paper plate to see where the bullet is impacting on the target. Move your sights until the bullets hit in the middle of the paper plate. Once this is done your rifle will be sighted in at 25 yards. Next, move your target to the distance where you feel you will be shooting most often and see where the bullets impact at that distance. Move the sights, if you need to, until they impact in the middle of the paper plate.
