Renaissance

The Renaissance began in Italy at about the beginning of the 14th century and lasted until the 17th century. We might use the dates 1300 to 1600, but there are many suggestions on how to date the time. I have seen beginning dates ranging from 1295 to 1400, and the dates for the end of the Renaissance seem even more difficult to pin down.

It is probably good to note that the Middle Ages and the Renaissance overlap.

The renaissance was a time of great prosperity, wealth, and the end to a feudal society. this meant that the lord no longer took things from people and the lord gave the people things they needed, the people would make money and they would buy what they need and if they had some money left over they would ether save it or buy something to improve their job.

An indulgence was a piece of paper which an individual purchased. A given amount of money would purchase a certain amount of days that a person would not need to serve in Purgatory. It resembled paying a fine or spending time in jail.

The idea of Purgatory came from a Pagan writer. The idea of praying for the dead came from a Jewish writer. The church put the two together. Thus, the idea of time in Purgatory and indulgence is not from the Bible.

A Indulgence is, It is a unleashing of the treasure trove of mercy stored by Jesus, Mary and all the saints. It is a kind of reward for good works; donations to pay for a Chapel, or convent are perfectly fine, as you can see in 2 Maccabees 12:43-46 (where they donate money)...which Luther removed from the bible. You can also earn them by saying prayers with indulgences attached for a set number of days, or even reading your bible for at least 30 mins (once per day limit).
