Why only pass backward in rugby?

If you pass forward, it will be a forward pass.

~

The "back pass" rule in both codes is one of the few, close to original rules that comes from the day of Webb Ellis "running with the ball". The rules of his time only allowed a player to retreat backwards carrying the ball or kick forwards. The pass in line or behind the ball carrier was placed in the rule book so that the ethos of the ball to the rear was still kept and it was then made an offence to throw/pass the ball forward of the original carrier, however, the carrier can kick the ball forward.

When did English rugby start?

The game of rugby started in its earliest creation in 1823 when a student of Rugby School Warwickshire picked up a ball and instead of running backward (as was the rules of football at the time) ran toward the opposing goal.

The legislation of Rugby came later when rules were formalised. This took place on January 26th 1871 and was attended by 21 clubs at the Pall Mall Restaurant in London's Regent Street. Some of the represented clubs still play today, most notably Harlequins and Blackheath, and London Wasps should be in that list as well but, although they planned to attend the meeting, their representative purportedly received incorrect information on the time and place (although it has been suggested that the man in question was simply too drunk to find the restaurant).

The chief consequence of the meeting was the foundation of the Rugby Football Union.

2004 IRB Law 2 states:

The ball must be oval and made of four panels.

Length in line 280 - 300 millimeters

Circumference (end to end) 740 - 770 millimeters

Circumference (in width) 580 - 620 millimeters

Material: Leather or suitable synthetic material. It may be treated to make it water resistant and easier to grip.

Weight: 410 - 460 grams

Air pressure at start of play: 65.71-68.75 kilopascals, or 0.67-0.70 kilograms per square centimeter, or 9.5-10.0 lbs per square inch. The ball is stitched together so that the 4 panels are joined. On the top of the large circumference a small hole is allowed where the inner "bladder" is pushed and then the valve is glued in to the bladder. The ball is then stitched around the valve and inflated to hold the shape. The ball is coated with a poly resin to protect the leather and make it last longer under the pressure of kicking. Once the resin is dry the ball can be inflated using the valve.

What is the penalty for charging down a kick at goal too early in rugby union?

Is the kick in general play or a place kick for a conversion? In both cases, it's basically a case of getting your body in the way of a kick that has just been made - the aim is stop the opposition from either gaining territory or scoring points through kicking. In general play, (either territory punts or drop-goals) make sure you're on-side, run up to the kicker and try to bat down the ball as it leaves the boot (remember if it hits your hands this is NOT classed as a knock-on and any on-side player is free to scoop up the ball and carry on) BUT... be aware that if your hands are outstretched trying to reach the ball, your whole gut, chest and FACE are exposed - it's never a good look to take a hurtling rugger ball on the nose... Safest bet is to jump into a kicking opponent while slightly turning, this protects your more 'sensitive' areas - if you have no choice but to take 'em head on though, cross your arms in front of your face as the kick is made. As for charging down a conversion (haven't seen this succesfully done in ages, dunno if it's still allowed...), it's a case of being behind your own goal line, but not between the posts, and as the kicker begins his final approach to convert a try, you run up and try and use your arms/body to get in the way of the ball, trying to stop it from travelling to the goal - just like in the general play way noted above... ps - nothing looks better to spectators than a well timed charge-down, especially if it leads to your team gaining possession deep in the 'enemy' half. In addition to the large block of text inputted by 'Fisticuff': A charge-down from a conversion attempt does not revert back to an open play were anyone on-side is free to pick up the ball. Charging down the conversion is still allowed as I have done it myself. Worth trying particularly if there is narrow margin in the score line. To avoid a charge down from a place kick ensure you place the ball far enough back from the opposition to give you enough time to take your run up and kick the ball before they can reach you. An alternative to charging down would be trying to tackle the kicking player or push him off balance. A nice dump-tackle on the fly-half while he's standing on one leg always goes down well with the crowd!
