Sally Ride (May 26, 1951 – July 23, 2012) was a NASA astronaut, and was the first American woman in space. She served on investigation panels for both the Challenger and Columbia disasters. Along with her life partner, Tam O'Shaughnessy, she coauthored several children's books about science.
