Were samurai ever mercenaries?

Yes. The samurai themselves began as a sort of mercenary force -in the sense of 'warrior-for-hire'- and for much of recorded Japanese history it was common for the survivors of the losing side of a battle to become soldiers of fortune. After the Tokugawa clan united Japan, many warriors fled the country, not only from the defeat itself, but also if the samurai were Christian converts, since Christianity was outlawed under the Tokugawa. Such warrior exiles served many nationalities, and were often prized, not for fancy swords, or mythical skills (although they were still respected as elite warriors), but for their -almost wreckless- daring and total disregard for their own lives in battle.

The most famous such mercenary was Yamada Nagamasa, who established a Japanese settlement under the patronage of the king of Ayutthaya (modern day Thailand), where they were highly valued for their martial skills and made elite bodyguards. It was also recorded that the king of Cambodia was grateful for warriors of his Japanese settlement for helping him crush a rebellion. Similarly, the Spanish, the Dutch, and the Portuguese employed them to crush revolts in their newly acquired colonies accross South and South East Asia as well as in battles against eachother. For example, the Portuguese used samurai mercenaries in the Siege of Malacca in 1606, where they supposedly served with distinction against the Dutch.

Who are the samurai and what was their job?

Samurai were the members of the ruling/military class during the feudal periods of Japanese History. The word samurai means "to serve", in reference to the principal value of their code of conduct, Bushido, which was loyalty. A samurai's existence had a single purpose, to live and die in the service of his lord.

Samurai, also known as Bushido, was the later name of the warrior in the Bushi code. Bushi means warrior and Bushido means the way of the warrior then later Bushido was replaced with Samurai however you do not pronounce it Samuraido just Samurai. Samurai means the way of the warrior in Japanese.

How did the samurai use horses?

Samurai were fighting on horses in Medieval Japan. They were actually the cavalry.

Their primary war time weapon was the Yari, an about 7 foot long lance.

The Katana, Japanese sword, was their backup weapon when on the battlefield.

They would use the sword if they were thrown down from their horse during battle.

This is why in the Japanese swordsmanship Art (Iaido), most work ('forms' or Katas) start from a kneeling down position, as to educate the warrior how to draw their sword while raising up from the ground.

How do you get the samurai armor on halo 3?

There are two ways to get the "Katana" sword in Halo 3: Get 1,000 Gamerpoints in Halo 3 or get 49 out of 79 achievements in Halo 3. I recommend that you finish campaign on Legenday first (so you already have a lot of gamerpoints. It is frustrating, but it is worth it.) Then, just play the Legendary and Mythic Map Pack and get the Achievements there (most are about 25Gs but some are 50Gs.) Good luck!

You can Also get it by getting 50 EXP points in one playlist on Matchmaking (Online)

No there will not be new seasons of Afro Samurai. The show was only 5 episodes and the last one ended the series for good.

The Afro Samurai Resurection movie was said to be a season two but it was only a movie.Even if there was another season, what would it be about?Afro avenged his fathers death, lived in peace, fought to re-claim the number one headband and now theree is a kid that is an orphan.

What are three ways a samurai could lose honor?

Depending on their status and power, they would be hunted down, arrested and beheaded. To die with your arms tied behind your back, was considered an extremely dishonorable death, reserved only for brigands and thieves. See, the way animals are slaughtered in east Asia, is generally with a lightning fast lopping off of the head. Even though Buddhism forbids the consumption of meat, periods of famine or political tyranny, forced many in east Asia to seek more exotic forms of sustenance. By exotic I mean, things such as rats, goose embryos, dogs, because it was an "emergency," because they went hungry, many places in east Asia developed a taste for those animals. Personally I don't think people are supposed to eat them; in east Asia they only ate them because things were terrible. Its similar to the situation with black people; ever see that episode of "The Boondocks" called "The Itis?" It talks about how black people eat unhealthily because during their slave days, slave masters would give them the parts of the pig they themselves would not eat, and the reason, pig parts in black cousine are literally drowned in grease, is to make it edible. It became tradition, a part of black identity, however like the episode's message said, people are not supposed to be eating that, any more than Chinese should be eating goose embryos. Their ancestors ate dogs, and rats, and goose embryos because they were starving, and their families were starving.

Brief history lesson aside, the way you slaughter animals in east Asia, is with one clean, decisive swipe, so the animal does not suffer, to at least follow SOME of Buddhism, if the convention of veganism can not be followed. Buddhists, by the way, are 100% vegetarian, the strictest Buddhists, although, the majority are ovo-lacto vegetarians. Whatever the case getting to the point; the idea of hunching over and waiting to get your head lopped off, was similar to the idea, of lopping off the head of a pig people were going to be eating. That is, to have your head cut off with your arms tied behind your back, sent the message that "we will end your life, the way the life of an animal is ended, not the way the life of a warrior is ended." If a Samurai behaved dishonorably, that was his punishment; he would not be allowed to take part in a battle where the odds against him are hopeless, that way he dies honorably, nor would he be allowed to commit sepuku. He would simply be hunched over, and have his head lopped off, as if he was an animal.
