Scientific Notation

The process of searching for facts or details in a systematic manner.

In scientific notation, 0.00461 is 4.61*10^-3.

0.0003040 = 3.04x10-4

2 = 2.0 × 100

3.25 x 105

0.0000982 in Scientific Notation = 9.82 x 10-5

It is 1.8*10

Seventy-one ten-thousandths (0.0071) in standard form is: 7.1 × 10-3

3.01 x 10-3.

A notation is a system of written symbols used to represent numbers, amounts, or elements in something such as music or math. So scientific notation is the system used by scientists to simplify large numbers. And there isn't just scientific notation there's also stuff like electrical notation or musical notation. Put the decimal point after the first non-zero digit and copy all digits except trailing zeros. Multiply this by 10 to some power. To work out the power, count how many digits the decimal point must move to get back where it was in the original number; if the decimal point has to move to the left, make the count negative. Thus:

340000000 = 3.4 x 10^8

1.9 x 10^13

1.23 x 10^8

It is: 3.992*10^11 in scientific notation

It is: 6.4*10^6 in scientific notation

Scientific notation uses short-hand for long numbers, writing the numbers in a standard form of a decimal number greater or equal to 1 and less than 10 multiplied by a power of 10, whereas ordinary notation just writes the number as one would every number. It helps to avoid errors when there could be a lot of zeros and makes the writing of numbers more compact.. As an example, 573,000,000,000,000 would be written as 5.73 x 10^14.

This also allows numbers to be rounded as necessary without a bunch of 0s. For example, 573,261,578,357,198 to three significant figures would be 573,000,000,000,000 which would be written as 5.73 x 10^14 (as above).

Shift four decimal places to the right from the starting position to get:

4.15 x 10-4

3.2 × 101 nanoseconds.
