Since the 1970's the WTC was the most prominent buildings in NYC. They stood out and could be seen everywhere, so something like a comic would use it as part of a story. Until 9-11 it was impossible to think that they could actually be destroyed. Still, today I find it unbelievable that they are gone.

Some believe the passengers tried to re-take the plane and lost control, some believe the terrorists lost control themselves, while some conspiracy theorists believe it was shot down by the USAF.
